Requirements
  • No prior dialysis experience is required; paid comprehensive training is provided.
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
  • Must meet Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Must complete all appropriate state licensure, education, and training requirements.
  • Must successfully complete the organization dialysis training program and CPR certification.
  • Must be able to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and lifting or lowering solutions and equipment up to the stated weight limits.
  • Must pass the Ishihara color blindness test as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodations considered.
  • Must be able to travel between assigned facilities and various community locations; travel to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings may be required.
  • Must follow applicable organization, ethical business, infection control, and safety policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis healthcare team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines.
  • Assist with patient education regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, vascular access, treatment options, and home dialysis.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluations, and patient responses.
  • Initiate dialysis according to prescribed orders, including blood flow and dialysate flow.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide prescribed interventions.
  • Monitor patients’ responses to dialysis therapy and report significant information or changes in condition to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Discontinue dialysis according to established procedures, evaluate patients before termination of venous access, obtain hemostasis, and apply appropriate dressings.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled, including Narrow Venous Limits at 160.
  • Record accurate treatment parameters and complete hemodialysis treatment sheets and progress notes when applicable.
  • Observe patients and conduct machine safety checks; report unusual findings and document interventions and patient responses.
  • Evaluate vascular access during treatment, including arterial and venous monitoring pressures, and document or report unusual findings.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and collect, label, prepare, store, and route specimens according to laboratory requirements.
  • Clean blood spills and maintain a safe, clean, and organized working environment.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment to prevent wastage.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff under nurse supervision.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Prepare dialysis treatments and perform required pretreatment machine alarm testing, including Pressure Holding testing.
  • Initiate the Solution Delivery System.
  • Complete and document participation in Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
  • Enter treatment data into the designated clinical application accurately and promptly.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure required nursing signatures and corrections are completed.
  • Prepare initial patient charts and compile admission paperwork.
  • Prepare and print laboratory requisitions and coordinate collection by the appropriate laboratory courier.
  • Assist with infection control audits, reinforce infection control practices, and provide infection control education under the direction of the clinical manager or designee.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education and care information for new patients as allowed by state law.
  • Coordinate with appropriate Fresenius Kidney Care staff to support the patient experience and scheduled multidisciplinary care.
  • Explain home dialysis products and benefits and support patient understanding of home dialysis.
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit.
  • Demonstrate peritoneal dialysis setup and explain treatment options.
  • Coordinate transitions to the patient’s chosen dialysis modality.
  • Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the transitional care unit.
Desired Qualifications
  • Patient care experience in a hospital or related facility is preferred.
  • Experience as a State Tested Nursing Assistant, phlebotomist, or emergency medical technician is a plus.
