Mitsubishi's 4runner fighter officially getting Bronco sport-sized siblings. Published Sep 3, 2026, 6:34 PM EDT Brett T. Evans has more than a decade of experience driving, writing about, and evaluating automobiles. His early career comprised writing about pre- and post-war classic cars, as well as late-model performance diesel trucks. These varied experiences allowed him the chance to gain expertise in every corner of the auto world. Today, he spends much of his time on modern car culture and mass-market news. Although all eyes have been on the rumored (and then revealed) 2027 Mitsubishi Pajero for the last few months, the automaker has been cooking up some other SUV news in secret. Confirmed yesterday at the midsize SUV's debut, the three-row Pajero will also get "compact and small" siblings that will share its name, a move that'll imbue them with some off-road personality (if not as much overt capability). The entry-level SUVs haven't been confirmed for US sale - come to think of it, neither has the big Pajero - but CarBuzz Inc. suspect Mitsubishi might consider bringing 'em here to rival small crossovers like the Ford Bronco Sport and Subaru Crosstrek. There will be two more members of the Pajero family. Although Mitsubishi didn't reveal them, the automaker did include two obscured, pint-sized SUVs in its reveal presentation for the Pajero. One has the tall, narrow proportions of a kei car, not unlike the Delica Mini, which suggests less intense terrain capability in favor of around-town style and occasional outdoor adventures at the end of a country road. With standard all-wheel drive and a handful of off-road drive modes, the littlest Delica could be a solid basis for a kei-size SUV, which wouldn't be entirely out of character for Mitsubishi - the company offered a dinky little Pajero Mini powered by a 0.7-liter four-cylinder until 2012. The other vehicle hidden beneath the silk sheets is clearly larger than the suspected kei crossover. It looks like it could make a great replacement for the aging Outlander Sport, which has been on the market essentially unchanged since the 2011 model year. Unlike that vehicle, the potential Pajero pequeño is tall and blocky, with a stance that reminds CarBuzz Inc. of the first-generation Land Rover Discovery - just downsized a bit. Again, there's precedent for a compact off-road SUV, as Mitsubishi marketed a Grand Vitara-sized Pajero iO (also called the Pajero Pinin) until 2015 in some markets. It seems all but guaranteed that Mitsubishi will use unibody architecture for both of its small Pajero-family SUVs, considering the company doesn't really have a body-on-frame platform that's smaller than the one used by the Pajero and its Triton pickup sibling. That doesn't necessarily preclude off-road personality, considering the Bronco Sport, Forester Wilderness, and bygone Land Rover Freelander all use unitized chassis and can handle an off-road trail or two. Base: $29,995 * Base Trim Engine - 1.5L I4 Hybrid * Base Trim Transmission - 2-speed CVT * Base Trim Drivetrain - Front-Wheel Drive * Base Trim Horsepower - 177 HP @6000 RPM * Base Trim Torque - 207 lb.-ft. @ 3600 RPM * Make - Mitsubishi * Model - Outlander Exterior Design Performance Fuel Efficiency Interior & Cargo Infotainment & Features Reliability Value For Money Will the Pajero and its compact siblings come to the US? Mitsubishi Motors North America hasn't confirmed whether the newly revealed Pajero or its smaller counterparts will be offered in US showrooms. Considering how popular off-road-flavored SUVs and crossovers have become in the past five years or so, CarBuzz Inc. think the automaker would be missing out on a profitable little segment if it chooses to keep the Pajero family away, but the larger SUV is built exclusively in Thailand, and the Triton truck with which it shares a platform isn't offered in the US - tariffs and manufacturing complexity could conspire to keep it out of local dealerships, unfortunately. The same might not be true of the smaller Pajero SUVs. A kei-class trucklet wouldn't make the swim across the Pacific, but a subcompact or compact SUV could be just the ticket to help Mitsubishi accomplish two goals: Become more profitable and re-establish a unique identity in the US. Sales for its existing small SUVs, the Eclipse Cross and the Outlander Sport, are a drop in the bucket compared to their more popular rivals from Subaru and Toyota, and a stylish, off-road-oriented Pajero crossover could help the brand gain more visibility and relevance. CarBuzz insight - why this matters: The Pajero alone was enough to prove that there are signs of life at Mitsubishi, and now that there are two smaller vehicles that'll take after their off-road legend of a big brother, the brand might be right on the verge of a healthy turnaround. CarBuzz Inc.'d love to witness it up close, as in, from behind the wheel of a rebadged 2028 Montero or Montero Sport, but CarBuzz Inc.'ll see if that's the case. If not, America will once again miss out on some of Mitsubishi's coolest, most unique cars.
Two-Times Subaru owner drives 2.5 hours to purchase his 3rd outback, but gets disappointed With The boxy body style because at 5 feet it's hard to look over the hood. At just under 5 feet tall, one Subaru owner says the 2026 Outback's 8.7 inch ground clearance now makes it hard to see over the hood. She still drove 2.5 hours to buy her third one. Advertising August 31, 2026 - 4:51PM EDT A three time Outback buyer just drove 150 miles round trip to a Subaru dealer, and the redesign nearly talked her out of the purchase before she even got the keys. Her comment landed under its story on the 2027 Outback's 8.7 inch ground clearance and its wagon versus SUV identity crisis, and it deserves its own spotlight, because it touches the same visibility question Torque News raised when the Outback and Forester were named the best SUVs for short drivers. Lucy Schmidt wrote the following under that article. "On Friday (3 days ago) I drove 2.5 hours to my nearest Subaru dealer to purchase my 3rd new Subaru outback touring since 2015. I was disappointed with the change in body style. At just under 5 feet tall, the boxier body style makes it more challenging for me to look out over the hood at all even with multiple seat adjustments. I am getting along well with the wagon style body. The increase in height for clearance was also quite noticeable for me. I did not want a hybrid, so am happy about that. "One other thing I was hoping for, but forgot to discuss at the time was remote start. I had the Starlink package when it was free with previous Outbacks, but did not care about that, so did not renew it. Just today I read that the 2026 Outbacks need Starlink security upgrade for remote start. I don't care about and won't use Starlink, so that is just an added monthly bill that I don't need just so I can have remote start. I would much prefer to just use my fob. I had to order a vehicle in transit to get my color choice. I am hoping that remote start for fob can be added prior to picking up the vehicle. The MSRP and trade in price were not exactly what I was hoping for, so may still change my mind, if I could find another good vehicle without hybrid feature." Subaru Outback Visibility For Short Drivers, What Changed With The Redesign Lucy's complaint about looking over the hood is worth taking seriously, since the old Outback built its reputation on this exact strength. Consumer Reports has repeatedly ranked the Outback as the best midsize SUV in the country for outward visibility, largely because the low mounted Boxer engine let the hood slope downward in front of the driver. That same downward sloping hood is why the Outback and Forester have shown up for years on lists of the best SUVs for short drivers, including a Consumer Reports tester who is 5 foot 1 inch tall and specifically evaluates hood visibility during every test drive. A taller, boxier front end works against that advantage, even when the seat itself adjusts correctly. Subaru has also earned recognition on Kelley Blue Book's list of the best cars for short drivers, a list that specifically credited the Outback's 8.7 inch ride height for helping smaller drivers see the road ahead. That is the same 8.7 inch figure Torque News discussed in its original story on this redesign, and it shows how one number can help visibility in one way while a taller hood works against it in another. If you are shorter and cross shopping the new Outback, do not skip a real test drive. Sit in the seat, adjust the mirrors, and specifically look for the top of the hood before you commit to an order, the same checklist Torque News outlined when Torque News asked whether the Outback could get any more comfortable according to Consumer Reports testers. Older Outback and Forester models built this reputation over many years, which is why used examples still appear on lists of the best used cars for short drivers today. Shoppers who value that low, easy sightline may want to cross shop a lightly used previous generation Outback alongside the new one. Advertising Subaru Outback Remote Start And Starlink, What Buyers Need To Know Before Ordering Lucy's second issue affects almost every current Subaru buyer, not just Outback shoppers. Subaru's Starlink connected services now gate remote start behind a subscription tier, and this has generated confusion across owner forums for years, a pattern Torque News first flagged when Torque News asked whether buyers would tolerate paying a monthly fee for features like remote start. Subaru's Companion and Companion Plus tiers, along with the older Safety Plus and Security Plus tiers, come with a free trial period, then roll into a paid subscription if you do not cancel. Remote engine start through the MySubaru app sits behind that same paywall, so once your trial lapses, the phone based remote start stops working unless you pay again. CoPilot has broken down the current pricing structure for owners trying to understand exactly what each tier unlocks. The workaround Lucy is asking about, a traditional key fob remote start with no subscription attached, still exists at some dealers as a separate hardware installation. It typically costs several hundred dollars as an aftermarket add on rather than a factory feature. It is worth asking your dealer directly whether that fob based module can be installed before delivery, especially on a vehicle already in transit like Lucy's, a concern that echoes the reliability questions Torque News raised in its report on the 2027 Outback's ground clearance and hybrid delay. Buyers who plan to keep their Outback for many years, the way Lucy has with three straight models since 2015, should also factor in long term ownership costs like the CVT service concerns Torque News detailed after one Outback owner faced an unexpected transmission repair bill well outside the powertrain warranty window. Buying An Outback That Is Still In Transit, What You Can And Cannot Change Ordering a vehicle in transit, the way Lucy did to get her color choice, limits how much you can still request. Paint, trim, and factory options are locked once the vehicle leaves the port, but dealer installed accessories like a fob based remote start module can often still be added at the dealership before you take delivery. This is a good moment to ask your salesperson directly, in writing, whether the accessory can be installed and what it will cost, rather than assuming it will simply appear at pickup. Advertising MSRP And Trade In Value, Why Numbers Rarely Match Expectations Lucy mentioned that her MSRP and trade in offer were not what she hoped for, and that disappointment is common right now. Dealer markups, regional demand, and a redesigned model in its first full year on sale all push negotiating leverage toward the dealer rather than the buyer. Its advice is simple and it applies well beyond Subaru. Get your trade in appraised independently before you walk into the dealership, bring that number with you, and treat the first offer as a starting point rather than a final answer. The Bigger Lesson Buried In One Comment Lucy's story is a reminder that the best car for you is not always the best car on paper. A vehicle can win every award for reliability and safety and still fail you in a small, personal way, like a sightline over the hood that used to feel natural and suddenly does not. Listening to buyers like Lucy, rather than dismissing a single comment as one person's preference, is exactly how automakers improve the next redesign. It is also a good habit off the road, since the smallest complaint often points to the real problem everyone else is too polite to mention. Have you or someone you know struggled to see over the hood of a redesigned SUV after years in an older, lower model? And would you pay a monthly Starlink subscription just to keep remote start, or would you rather install an aftermarket fob system instead? Tell Torque News about your experience in the comments below.
Subaru is planning to relocate its Cherry Hill dealership. The site was once home to the corporate headquarters of Subaru of America until its move in 2018. by Neill Borowski, 70and73 Published Aug. 31, 2026, 5:47 p.m. ET Listen to article - 3:40 min In a case of corporate déjà vu, the Subaru of Cherry Hill dealership plans to move from one side of Route 70 to the eastbound side on about 14 vacant acres that held the corporate headquarters of Subaru of America until its 2018 move to Camden. The new Subaru dealership, first approved in 2023 by the Cherry Hill Planning Board, now requires amended plans that include site design changes to reflect New Jersey Department of Environment Protection flood hazard regulations. The Cooper River is across Park Boulevard from the property. Subaru's amended application is scheduled to be considered by the board at its Sept. 8 online meeting, which begins with a caucus at 7 p.m. The showroom, service area, and other offices will occupy a 67,035-square-foot building footprint that includes a 21,840-square-foot showroom and 36,350-square-foot service area. Site plans call for 658 parking spaces, of which 454 will be used to store Subaru's car inventory. The five-story, $18-million Subaru corporate headquarters on Route 70 opened in 1986 and was demolished in 2019 after the corporation's 2018 move to a new $118-million home in Camden. Subaru's headquarters wasn't the most famous building to occupy the 2235 Route 70 site. The Latin Casino, where some of the most famous entertainers of the day performed, opened there in 1960 and was demolished in the early 1980s. Steve Martin, Tom Jones, Dean Martin, Dionne Warwick, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, and Johnny Mathis performed at the 1,500-seat dinner club in Cherry Hill, according to website Concert Archives. Rhythm and blues singer Jackie Wilson in 1975 was performing on stage when he had a massive heart attack that left him in and out of comas until his death in 1984. The Subaru dealership plans originally were approved by the Planning Board in 2023. Star Real Estate of Cherry Hill II LLC, the developer at the time, assigned its approvals to Subaru of America Inc. and Subaru Insurance Agency Inc., which are now developing the site, according to the township. The current dealership is at 1800 Route 70 westbound. An operations statement from the developer says the site will have about 35 employees in the sales area and about 45 employees in the parts and service area, according to township records. Test drives would turn right onto Park Boulevard, turn right at the Audi dealership, and left at the light onto Route 70, according to the application. Drivers would go to the Wawa in Pennsauken and turn around and come back on Route 70. Landscaping at the new dealership will be designed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and will be consistent with Subaru branding and similar to the Camden headquarters, according to the dealer's application. Subaru of Indiana Automotive adopts color-coded Markforged tooling for multi-model production. Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) is using Markforged Onyx GF to produce color-coded tooling for its multi-model automotive production operations. The material is being used to make variant-specific jigs easier for operators to identify while providing greater durability than previously used ABS parts. SIA runs multiple vehicle models simultaneously, creating situations where similar tools may differ by only a few millimeters. Associates therefore need to identify and retrieve the correct jig quickly during assembly. Color coding provides a visual method for distinguishing between these tools. SIA had previously produced low-volume custom parts in different colors using 3D printed ABS. However, Markforged says the material lacked the durability required for tooling repeatedly handled and reused on the factory floor. Rob Cooper of SIA said the visual distinction becomes particularly important when three vehicle models are running concurrently, as operators may have little time to determine which jig is required for a particular assembly. SIA subsequently introduced Onyx GF into these applications while continuing to use its existing Markforged 3D printing setup. Different colors can be assigned to tooling associated with individual vehicle variants or factory locations. Color-coded jigs position bumper tracking labels One application involves positioning QR labels used to track bumpers as they move through SIA's paint shop. Adhesive labels are manually applied to each bumper before being read by fixed overhead scanners. The bumpers do not contain dedicated locating features for the labels, which resulted in inconsistent label placement and occasional missed scanner reads. Missed reads required production personnel to manually track, re-scan and reconcile the affected bumper before the line could continue. SIA produced a family of placement jigs that reference the external geometry of each bumper. These fixtures define where the QR label should be applied rather than relying solely on manual positioning. The jigs position the labels to a tolerance of 0.1 mm. Separate tools were produced for different vehicle models, front and rear bumpers, and trim levels. Onyx GF allowed SIA to give individual model variants different colors, providing operators with an additional visual indication of which placement jig should be used for each bumper. Onyx GF replaces ABS in assembly jig SIA has also applied the material to tooling used when handling cam cap carriers. For this application, the company's lab required a base component for a cradle jig. An earlier version produced from ABS was prone to cracking during use. SIA replaced the component with a version 3D printed in yellow Onyx GF. The replacement has resisted the failure experienced with the ABS part while its color identifies where the tool is intended to be used on the factory floor. The two applications demonstrate how SIA is combining material selection with visual identification rather than using color coding alone. In the bumper application, the printed geometry controls label positioning while color differentiates vehicle variants. For the assembly jig, the material is intended to provide greater durability while its color communicates where the component belongs. 3D printed tooling moves further onto automotive production lines 3D printed jigs and fixtures are already used elsewhere across Subaru's US operations. Earlier this year, Subaru of America reported using a Stratasys F770 to produce accessory-installation tooling in-house, cutting development times by more than 50% and fabrication costs by around 70%. Automotive manufacturers have also previously used lower-cost thermoplastics for positioning tools. At Nissan's Barcelona plant, more than 700 parts had been produced using BCN3D FFF systems by 2021, including an ABS jig for positioning vehicle model names and an ABS drill-positioning tool. Nissan reported reducing some tooling lead times from one week to one day while lowering average costs by 95%. While ABS has already been used for some production-line positioning tools, SIA's adoption of Onyx GF reflects the added durability and the visual identification demands of tooling used across multiple vehicle variants. 3D Printing Industry is inviting speakers for its 2026 Additive Manufacturing Applications (AMA) series, covering Energy, Healthcare, Automotive and Mobility, Aerospace, Space and Defense, and Software.
