Requirements
  • The candidate must be a graduate of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
  • The candidate must be licensed by and in good standing with the Alabama Board of Nursing to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide palliative care to patients of all age groups.
  • The candidate must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • The candidate must be able to use the medical supplies and equipment necessary to perform the role.
  • The candidate must be able to lift and support 50 pounds while handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies.
  • The candidate must possess normal or corrected hearing and vision and be able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
Responsibilities
  • The Palliative Care Advanced Practice Provider provides direct palliative care services to patients of all age groups under the immediate supervision of and in collaboration with licensed physicians.
  • Perform initial and periodic medical histories, physical examinations, and daily assessments as directed by physicians, and record examination and assessment findings.
  • Educate patients, families, and DCH staff members about infectious disease conditions and issues.
  • Perform hospital consultations under physician supervision and direction.
  • Respond to daily telephone requests from outside consulting physicians, DCH case managers, DCH social work, clinical staff, and other DCH Health System staff.
  • Write medication orders in the medical record based on established written protocols and licensure.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic laboratory and radiology examinations as appropriate for diagnosing and treating conditions.
  • Monitor treatment plans established by the supervising physician.
  • Document patient encounters, observations, interventions, and actions in the patient medical record.
  • Participate in developing, implementing, and evaluating Infectious Disease Program best practices.
  • Participate in Infectious Disease Program performance-improvement initiatives and assigned hospital quality initiatives.
  • Collaborate with DCH Infection Prevention Specialists to ensure effective program operations.
  • Perform essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices that may cause harm to patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Recognize and take appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards for patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Use electronic mail, time-and-attendance software, learning-management software, and the intranet.
  • Adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior nursing or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner experience in acute care, hospice, or palliative care is preferred.
