Requirements
  • Current Vocational Nurse licensure.
  • Basic Life Support certificate.
  • Competence in medical terminology, clinical skills, medical equipment use, infection control and prevention practices, nursing regulations, and dosage calculations.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality in communications and handle protected health information appropriately.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to maintain required certifications and continuing education.
  • Ability to respond to unusual or varied situations not covered by existing standards, procedures, or precedents.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, ascend and descend stairs, handle objects, tools, or controls, reach with the hands and arms, lift 25 pounds, and occasionally assist in moving adult patients.
  • Ability to use a stethoscope to assess breath sounds and Korotkoff sounds.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct and individualized nursing care to an assigned group of patients under the supervision of a registered professional nurse.
  • Conduct focused assessments after the registered nurse completes initial comprehensive assessments.
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of nursing care.
  • Participate in developing and modifying ongoing nursing care plans.
  • Communicate with patients, families, ancillary personnel, and hospital departments involved in patient care.
  • Assist with patient and family health teaching under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Share responsibility for planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care plans and nursing care.
  • Prepare, administer, and record medications according to medication-administration policies.
  • Participate in emergency situations.
  • Communicate ongoing patient status to the registered nurse.
  • Document information concisely, accurately, and completely.
  • Identify and use appropriate communication channels.
  • Comply with state board of nursing practice standards.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned, requested, or required.
  • Function as a patient advocate and provide nursing care appropriate to the patient's condition.
Desired Qualifications
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is highly recommended.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is highly recommended.
  • One year of clinical practice is preferred.
