Requirements
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required for those hired on or after June 1, 2017.
  • One to three months of related experience and/or training is preferred.

  • The role requires sustained CRT work between 70 and 90 percent of the time, close visual tolerances, and considerable hand-eye coordination.
  • The role requires considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of objects weighing 20 pounds or less, and assisting with heavier tasks such as lifting and moving patients.

Responsibilities
  • Perform clerical and receptionist functions for the unit under unit leadership supervision.
  • Prepare and compile records on the nursing unit; coordinate unit communication systems, including phones, the nurse call system, and hospital information systems; relay information; maintain public relations; and assist with supplies, equipment, and the unit environment.
  • Demonstrate competencies specific to the population served when providing direct patient care.
  • Coordinate information flow throughout the unit or department for all staff.
  • Answer telephone and nurse call system inquiries and provide information or relay messages to patients, visitors, and medical staff.
  • Direct visitors to patients’ rooms or visitor waiting areas.
  • Distribute mail, newspapers, and flowers to patients.
  • Compile patient census, maintain records, and distribute information according to unit or department procedures.
  • Coordinate with the charge nurse to support smooth, efficient, and timely patient flow into, through, and out of the department.
  • Perform clerical duties and process equipment and staff requests related to department needs.
  • Record the patient's name and address and attending physician's name to prepare medical records for new patients.
  • Maintain the file of medical records for patients in the unit.
  • Monitor and requisition supplies designated by nursing staff and organize and store them according to unit or department procedures.
  • Gather, input, and retrieve information in computerized systems.
  • Transport patients and guests within the facility as directed or needed.
  • Stock supplies to facilitate patient care in the assigned unit.
  • Take admission paperwork to the room and facilitate and complete Medicare/important message and other paperwork as directed by the RN.
  • Manage incoming tubes from the tube station and deliver medications or other items to the RN or medication cart.
  • Work with transport staff to monitor elevator bays for beds and carts.
  • Assist in monitoring the Environment of Care.
  • Attend to patient and family needs, including passing water and getting towels, and perform other assigned duties.
  • Maintain unsupervised access to unit medication rooms for stocking and/or retrieving supplies.
  • In OB Mother Baby/Antepartum only, hold and cuddle stable newborn infants under the direction and supervision of the RN.
  • At BMH, when functioning as a Patient Safety Assistant for suicide precautions, observe and report patient activities and behaviors and respond appropriately to support patient safety.
  • At BMH, when functioning as a Patient Safety Assistant, communicate patient status and relevant input to the responsible RN to facilitate care planning.
  • At BMH, when functioning as a Patient Safety Assistant, occasionally accompany patients to diagnostic tests.
  • At BMH, when functioning as a Patient Safety Assistant, maintain a clean and orderly environment.
