Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
  • A current Texas Registered Nurse license.
  • Basic Life Support certification and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.
  • Proficiency in the nursing process for clients with complex nursing care needs and the ability to guide and direct others providing care.
  • Proficiency in keyboarding and basic computer operations.
  • Physical capability to initiate crisis intervention measures and knowledge of emergency nursing care.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills when dealing with patients, families, and staff.
Responsibilities
  • Assess the patient's physiological and psychological health status preoperatively.
  • Formulate and implement a nursing plan of care based on health data and the surgical procedure and posting.
  • Plan care to achieve patient goals and coordinate and organize nursing activities.
  • Coordinate patient care needs with team members, including other disciplines.
  • Position patients properly for surgery.
  • Create and maintain a sterile field.
  • Verify sterility methods and safely use flash autoclaves.
  • Receive, handle, store, and document prostheses.
  • Perform surgical hand scrubs and maintain sterile fields.
  • Provide equipment, supplies, and instruments based on anticipated and unanticipated needs.
  • Use and care for surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Use and document the electrosurgery unit safely.
  • Perform and document counts.
  • Administer drugs and solutions as prescribed.
  • Physiologically monitor patients during procedures.
  • Monitor and control the operating-room environment.
  • Adhere to infection-control standards.
  • Perform accountable nursing actions.
  • Participate in patient and family teaching.
  • Perform and document the universal protocol.
  • Handle and care for specimens and cultures on and off the sterile field.
  • Safely handle and transport medical gases and hazardous materials.
  • Perform circulating and scrub duties for general, urology, vascular, neurological, plastic, orthopedic, ophthalmology, pain-management, oral, robotic, thoracic, and otolaryngology surgeries.
  • Demonstrate leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies.
  • Apply the nursing process at the unit, team, or work-group level to improve care.
  • Identify potential client problems and take appropriate nursing measures to intervene.
  • Function effectively in a team-leader or leadership role to identify, analyze, and resolve problems.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate client care consistent with accrediting and regulatory bodies, the Veterans Affairs mission, and Nursing Service standards.
  • Supervise other personnel and provide feedback on their performance.
  • Work effectively with clients, families, significant others, professional and supportive personnel, and members of other services.
