Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Science or Master's Degree in Science is required.
  • Completion of a Pathologist's Assistant training program or Histotechnician American Society for Clinical Pathology certification is required.
  • Five years of clinical experience are required.
  • Three years of experience as a surgical pathology technician, including gross examination of tissue, are required.
  • One year of Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement, or Performance Improvement experience is required.
  • Working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements concerning chemical hygiene and blood-borne pathogens is required.
  • Understanding of safety rules and regulations, management techniques, laws, and legal interpretations is required.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, pathology, medical terminology, and physiology sufficient to identify, dissect, and describe certain surgical specimens is required.
  • Knowledge of dissection, sectioning techniques, and appropriate procedures for handling tissue is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of histopathologic techniques and methods is required.
  • Knowledge of methods used to obtain clinical history, including scans, x-rays, and laboratory data, is required.
  • Familiarity with dictation, dictation equipment, and computers is required.
  • The position requires knowledge of department and hospital policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of pathology services.
  • The position requires the ability to retrieve, communicate, or present information in written, auditory, or visual formats.
  • The position requires the ability to accurately judge when consultation is needed regarding appropriate specimen dissections.
  • The position requires good physical and mental health, finger and hand dexterity, visual and aural acuity, agility, and the ability to walk, stoop, bend, stretch, lift, and move supplies and equipment.
  • The position requires compliance with personal protective equipment procedures for occupational exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • The position requires compliance with the annual influenza prevention program or an approved exemption.

Responsibilities

  • Manage laboratory testing within designated sections while ensuring compliance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures related to pathology services.
  • Direct and coordinate the efforts of team members and provide guidance on appropriate specimen dissections.
  • Perform surgical desk functions following the guidelines of surgical pathology technicians.
  • Coordinate the efforts of the Manager, Assistant Director, Pathologists, employees, and other departments to meet special needs and address problems or concerns.
  • Examine, describe, dissect, and section selected biopsy and surgical resection specimens under the direction of a staff pathologist.
  • Determine which areas of gross specimens should be sampled for microscopic analysis and cut them into appropriately sized sections for further processing.
  • Analyze certain gross and biopsy specimens by identifying, measuring, weighing, and describing them according to established guidelines.
  • Section specimens and dictate their gross features.
  • Collaborate with pathology staff to identify areas likely to be involved by neoplastic or inflammatory conditions in surgical specimens.
  • Process specimens such as conization of the cervix.
  • Assist pathology staff in selecting tissues for frozen-section analysis.
  • Check refrigeration for late specimens from the previous day.
  • Perform accessioning functions for all specimens received by identifying specimens, assigning accession numbers, logging them in, and entering pertinent information into the computer terminal.
  • Ensure appropriate accession and numbering of all surgical specimens.
  • Photograph gross specimens requiring photography and maintain their records.
  • Prepare solutions and fixatives, stains, and decalcify mineralized specimens.
  • Maintain records of discarded and saved specimens.
  • Prepare gross specimens for maintenance and storage.
  • Check equipment for proper operation and calibrate it when necessary.
  • Maintain equipment and instruments used at the surgical desk according to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with local, federal, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, and College of American Pathologists regulations.
  • Assist, initiate, and institute specialized procedures and duties designated by the Medical Director or staff pathologist, including administrative and teaching functions.
  • Obtain patient charts and pertinent data, including x-rays and scans, for review with the pathologist.
  • Confer with the pathologist to identify special techniques and procedures needed, including histochemical, immunofluorescence, toxicological, viral, electron microscopic, culture, and smear studies, and notify involved personnel.
  • Work with staff pathologists to ensure proper restoration of the body for acceptable release to the funeral director and indicate biohazards such as contagious disease or radioactive implants.
  • Ensure completion of the autopsy protocol, correct coding and filing of protocols and reports, filing of photographic and microscopic slides, and maintenance of anatomical pathology reports and data.
  • Maintain complete and up-to-date documentation and files, including product and service quotes.
  • Serve as histology supervisor in the absence of the histology supervisor.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Desired Qualifications

  • A background as a pathology or microbiology laboratory assistant is preferred.
  • Certification as a Pathology Assistant is preferred.
