Requirements
  • Experience in a clinical neurophysiology setting, including at least 1 year of post-graduate clinical experience within the last 2 years performing EEG procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of electroencephalography, nerve conduction studies, and evoked potentials.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, neuroanatomy, neurological conditions, EEG manifestations, basic electricity and electronics, instrumentation capabilities and limitations, patient preparation, and emergency resuscitation measures.
  • Completion of an accredited EEG technologist training program and formal training as an Electroencephalogram Technician.
  • ABRET certification as an EEG Technician through the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
  • U.S. citizenship.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine diagnostic studies and services, including electroencephalography, nerve conduction studies, and evoked potentials.
  • Determine required patient preparation and adjust recording strategies or instrument parameters to produce complete and technically satisfactory studies.
  • Process studies and submit them to the requesting or interpreting physician.
  • Document procedures and maintain records according to established policies.
  • Perform system calibrations and quality-control tasks according to manufacturer and medical treatment facility policies.
  • Apply EEG, nerve conduction study, and evoked potential concepts to patients from neonates through geriatrics and across outpatient, inpatient, emergency, intensive-care, and critical-care settings.
  • Detect central and peripheral nervous system disorders, including seizure disorders, through EEG, nerve conduction, and evoked potential studies.
  • Place the 10–20 electrode system and supplemental electrode sites accurately.
  • Adjust procedures for anatomical defects, variants, and anomalies after physician or provider approval, including necessary technical corrections and additional study components.
  • Review patient data, medical records, and history to design or adjust ordered studies after physician or provider approval.
  • Recognize signs, symptoms, and EEG correlations for pediatric and adult neurological disorders.
  • Serve as a training proctor for EEG, nerve conduction, and evoked potential trainees.
  • Perform, schedule, and administer specialized EEGs for laboratory, inpatient, intensive-care, emergency-room, and neonatal-nursery patients to record brain-wave patterns and identify artifacts.
  • Perform long-term continuous epilepsy monitoring.
  • Conduct specialized neurological examinations and complex procedures for patients of all ages.
  • Perform routine sensory and motor nerve conduction studies under the oversight of an attending electrodiagnostic physician.
  • Perform evoked potential studies, including brainstem auditory, visual, and somatosensory evoked responses.
  • Perform advanced evoked studies involving topographic display fields and nonstandard evoked potential evaluations when required.
  • Clean and sterilize equipment and electrodes and prepare work areas for the next patient according to infection-control policies.
