Requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of codes regarding installation of HVAC/R systems, refrigeration, and associated equipment.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in the general maintenance field and knowledge of basic maintenance skills.
  • Sufficient knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical equipment to make minor repairs and adjustments, including pneumatic, electrical, and D.D.C. control systems.
  • Extensive knowledge and use of computers for Building Management Systems.
  • Ability to work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions; perform shop computations; and conduct standard equipment tests.
  • Ability to work from ladders, bucket trucks, scaffolds, pits, and manholes, including lifting up to 60 pounds.
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions in English.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools and work alone with minimal supervision.
  • High School Diploma or GED and vocational or technical training.
  • Valid and current United States Driver’s License.
  • Valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technicians License.
  • EPA Universal Certification.
  • Valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Contractors License.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and OSHA rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work inside and outside campus buildings and grounds during all New England seasons.
  • Ability to drive a university vehicle.
Responsibilities
  • Relay information, assignments, and schedules to others as directed by a supervisor or manager.
  • Relay the status and progress of ongoing work from other shop employees to supervisors or management.
  • Assist with work distribution and prioritization when necessary.
  • Train, orient, and instruct other staff as directed.
  • Act as a liaison between union staff and supervisors or management.
  • Collaborate and consult with contractors and campus staff as needed.
  • Obtain required permits when necessary.
  • Report issues to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC equipment and distribution systems, including controls, bearings, filters, compressors, belts, and motors.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair laboratory equipment connected to HVAC systems, including refrigeration, air, gas, vacuum, and hoods.
  • Keep logs, write reports and shift reports, and identify or request HVAC materials.
  • Plan, lay out, and install piping and equipment using blueprints, drawings, sketches, or verbal instructions.
  • Perform major and minor repairs on heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all equipment.
  • Repair pumps, valves, and pressure regulators.
  • Shape, cut, ream, caulk, sweat, solder, and thread piping and fittings using hand tools and power-driven machines.
  • Install appliances and equipment as needed.
  • Provide support during events, the annual electrical shutdown, school opening, and commencement.
  • Report building damage, malfunctioning equipment, and needed maintenance or repairs.
  • Respond to emergency call-ins as needed.
  • Assess and update work-order assignments in the computerized work-order management system.
  • Participate in training to maintain current operational knowledge and skills.
  • Work cooperatively with supervisors, coworkers, department heads, and campus community members.
  • Work amid changing priorities and time deadlines.
  • Attend leadership meetings as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • OSHA 10 training.
