Shoprite Freshmark connects local growers and cuts waste.

Shoprite Freshmark connects local growers and cuts waste. By Yanti Suryani October 22, 2026 The path that fresh fruit and vegetables take from the farm to the consumer is far more detailed than the simple "farm to fork" concept implies. Before reaching supermarket shelves, these products move through multiple stages - including growers, packing facilities, transportation networks, distribution centers, and retail outlets - each step impacting their freshness, quality, and food safety standards. Today's supply chain faces unprecedented challenges. Meanwhile, farmers contend with escalating production costs and climate-related uncertainties while facing ever-tighter quality standards. Combating food waste. For retailers, minimizing food waste represents one of the most effective strategies to improve both profitability and environmental sustainability. Advanced technologies now enable businesses to forecast demand with greater precision, optimize stock rotation, and quickly identify products nearing their sell-by dates before they become unsellable. Artificial intelligence is transforming waste reduction efforts, with global retailers utilizing predictive optimization software that has prevented an estimated 470 million kilograms of food from being discarded. By implementing "first expired, first out" inventory systems rather than traditional "first in, first out" methods, stores can prioritize products with the shortest remaining shelf life, significantly reducing inventory shrinkage while maintaining product availability. Modern 2D barcode technology has also transformed in-store operations. These advanced codes allow point-of-sale systems to automatically detect items approaching expiration and trigger promotional pricing, helping retailers move stock before quality declines. Shoprite Holdings exemplifies this approach through its Freshmark program, which sources up to 95 percent of its fresh produce directly from local growers. The initiative combines established commercial farms with emerging producers, ensuring reliable market access while maintaining consistent quality standards. One notable example is Bethel Estate in KwaZulu-Natal, which consolidates produce from approximately 100 small-scale women farmers for distribution through Shoprite's retail network. South Africa's fresh produce industry generates over R53 billion annually, with R32 billion flowing through direct supermarket purchases and R21 billion through the National Fresh Produce Markets. Investments in refrigeration technology and temperature-controlled logistics are expanding rapidly across South Africa, driven by the need to minimize losses and preserve freshness. Producers and logistics companies are increasingly adopting modular, solar-powered cold storage solutions that immediately remove field heat after harvest. Temperature control remains a major challenge, with research indicating that between 9,000 and 17,969 tonnes of fresh produce are lost annually at the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market alone due to cold chain failures and handling inefficiencies. Expanding cold chain infrastructure. Major investments are transforming South Africa's logistics capabilities. Maersk's Belcon Cold Store near the Port of Cape Town represents part of the company's R1.7 billion commitment to cold chain infrastructure development. This facility expands refrigerated storage capacity and enhances handling for both domestic and export fresh produce. DP World and Woolworths have introduced Thermo King's AxlePower trailer technology in South Africa, which captures kinetic energy from trailer axles to power refrigeration units. By reducing dependence on diesel generators, this system cuts fuel consumption and emissions without compromising temperature control. Food Lover's Market's Seeds of Change Supplier Development Partnership has integrated 15 sustainable suppliers into formal retail channels since 2022. The program identifies and supports businesses that demonstrate both commercial potential and positive environmental or social impact. While specialty produce continues to grow, potatoes, onions, and tomatoes still form the core of South Africa's vegetable market, accounting for approximately 60.3 percent of total domestic demand. Their affordability, versatility, and year-round availability maintain their status as essential retail categories, particularly as consumers increasingly seek information about food origins and production methods. South Africa annually loses an estimated 10 million tonnes of edible food - roughly one-third of total food production. This system provides each product with a complete digital identity through a single QR code. SPAR's Rural Hub Program demonstrates how decentralized procurement can strengthen local supply chains. By helping smallholder farmers produce vegetables near regional retail markets, the initiative reduces transportation needs and limits post-harvest losses. The Living Soils Community Learning Farm, supported by Woolworths, offers a 12-month program covering regenerative agriculture, soil preparation, food safety, and commercial crop production. This initiative combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience.

Gulf conflict upsets networks - and fleet size - of biggest feeder operators.

Gulf conflict upsets networks - and fleet size - of biggest feeder operators. Photo: VesselFinder 14 October 2026 The US-Iran conflict and subsequent closure of the Hormuz Straits have upended the networks, and fleet deployment strategies, of the world's three largest common feeder operators - and seen AD Ports' Global Feeder Services significantly close the gap on the market leaders. According to new analysis from Alphaliner, the Middle East conflict, now in its eighth month, has forced the two largest operators, X-Press Feeders and DP Worldm to reduce their offered capacity as the closure of Gulf routes curtailed their networks. "X-Press Feeders remains the world's largest feeder operator by deployed capacity, although its fleet has contracted by 7.1% year on year, as per Alphaliner's survey on 21 September," the analyst writes this week. "Fallout from the Middle East conflict forced X-Press to make service cuts across the region, which is the main reason for the decline." As a result, X-Press Feeders' global capacity is now 182,776 teu, down 13,987 teu from September 2025, with its capacity serving the Middle East region down 34.2% - equivalent to 38,000 teu - which Alphaliner linked to service suspension in the wake of the conflict. To offset this, it has increased capacity in the intra-Europe trades by 7.4%, and intra-Americas by 17.7%, and has even taken the unusual step, for a feeder operator, of joining a deepsea Asia-Europe service, via the deployment of the 4,800 teu X-Press Odyssey on the China-Mediterranean CEX service, jointly run with China United Lines, Uniglory, and Global Feeder Services. Meanwhile, DP World's global capacity, largely made up of the Unifeeder fleet, fell 2.5% during the year, a "modest overall decline, also driven by the Middle East conflict", said Alphaliner. It added: "Its deployed capacity in the ME/ISC related trade fell by 7,500 teu, while its operated capacity in all other regions remained broadly stable year on year. "Most of the cuts came from Gulf-related loops," Alphaliner wrote, noting it had largely redeployed capacity to the Asia-India trade, as well as to a number of extra loaders serving the ME/ISC trade. However, Emirati compatriot Global Feeder Services (GFS), owned by AD Ports, in what appears to be a commercial strategy that closely resembles that of DP World, saw its capacity jump by 31%, and its fleet is now only a fraction behind that of its rival - just 2,800 teu smaller - after it doubled-down on serving the India-Middle East trade corridor. "The ME/ISC trade remains GFS's core market and accounted for the bulk of its growth, in contrast to X-Press Feeders and DP World, which both reduced their presence there," said Alphaliner, calculating that GFS's capacity on that trade grew 26.9% and now accounts for around 70% of its total fleet. "While its two main competitors scaled back in the region, GFS kept its network largely intact. The carrier replaced Gulf calls on existing loops with Red Sea ports, and extended its reach into neighbouring trades. "As a result, GFS has overtaken both rivals to become the largest of the three in the ME/ISC trade, ahead of X-Press Feeders (about 73,500 teu) and DP World (about 70,500 teu)," the analyst added.
