Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited phlebotomy program is required.
  • One year of phlebotomy experience is required, preferably in an acute care facility setting.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, are required.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills are required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • A Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification from the California Department of Public Health is required.
  • Fire Life Safety Training from the City of Los Angeles is required; if the card is not available upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain blood specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods in response to clinician testing requests, considering the patient's age.
  • Receive and screen specimens for acceptability according to established guidelines.
  • Deliver blood products to Surgery and surgical specimens to the appropriate laboratory sections.
  • Process, distribute, or package all received specimens except Anatomic Pathology samples.
  • Handle inquiries about laboratory results, specimen status, and department functions.
  • Communicate and interact professionally with patients, coworkers, and institutional guests, considering the patient's age.
  • Follow established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional clinical and clerical duties as needed by the department.
  • Maintain professional growth and development and participate actively in the department's Quality Improvement program.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
