MetLife and CNP show interest in Prudential's businesses in Brazil and Mexico for US$3 billion.

MetLife and CNP show interest in Prudential's businesses in Brazil and Mexico for US$3 billion. Prudential seeks to obtain US$3 billion for the Brazil and Mexico operations combined, with Brazil accounting for almost 90% of the package, according to sources. By Cristiane Lucchesi - Matheus Piovesana - Alex Rajbhandari October 6, 2026 | 11:48 AM Bloomberg - Prudential Financial Inc.'s businesses in Brazil and Mexico have attracted interest from MetLife Inc. and CNP Assurances SA in a deal that could bring Prudential about US$3 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. Mapfre SA also showed interest earlier, but it is unclear whether it will submit a bid, the sources said, asking not to be identified because the information is private. Daiichi Life Group Inc. decided for now not to submit a bid, they added. The transaction is expected to be announced this year, although terms and potential buyers could still change, according to the sources. Prudential seeks to obtain US$3 billion for the Brazil and Mexico operations combined, with Brazil accounting for almost 90% of the package, according to the sources. Representatives for Prudential, MetLife, CNP, Daiichi, and Mapfre declined to comment. Prudential sells life insurance in Brazil and is among the largest insurers in the country, with 4.88 billion reais (US$977 million) in premiums between January and July, according to data from regulator Susep. Any buyer will probably have to deal with pending labor lawsuits against Prudential in Brazil, according to one of the sources. The company seeks to reverse the provisions linked to those lawsuits to pay a dividend to its parent before the closing of the deal. Some potential buyers, however, want to discount those provisions from the price. Prudential had almost 193 million reais provisioned for labor lawsuits in June 2026, according to its financial statements. Prudential, headquartered in Newark, New Jersey, seeks to simplify its operations by selling assets in emerging markets. CEO Andy Sullivan aims to reduce the company's presence and reallocate resources toward less capital-intensive businesses to boost earnings. CFO Yanela Frias said last month that the sale of the Brazil and Mexico units was "very advanced." Read more at Bloomberg.com

Prudential to consolidate in Newark, plans to sell two of three office towers.

Prudential to consolidate in Newark, plans to sell two of three office towers. Prudential Financial Inc. plans to sell its iconic Plaza Building at 751 Broad St. in Newark, its longtime corporate headquarters, and a second building at 213 Washington St. as part of a plan to consolidate at 655 Broad St. - Courtesy: Prudential. By Joshua Burd Prudential Financial intends to sell two of its Newark office buildings, including its iconic white marble headquarters, with plans to consolidate at a 740,000-square-foot tower that the company opened in 2015 and at additional leased locations. Andrew Sullivan, its CEO, announced the plans in an op-ed published Wednesday morning by NJ.com. While he expressed the company's continued commitment to Newark, its home since its founding in 1875, he said its growth has required it "to change with the needs of our customers, including how we work and where we invest." That includes selling its Plaza Building at 751 Broad St. and another building at 213 Washington St. and moving its headquarters to what's known as the Tower Building, at 655 Broad St. A company representative said it could not yet share additional details about brokers or plans for the leased space. "As Prudential becomes a more focused company, we are aligning our real estate footprint with our strategy and future ways of working," it said in an accompanying statement Wednesday. "Establishing the Tower Building as Prudential's global headquarters will create a more connected workplace and enable more efficient use of resources. Newark remains Prudential's home and we are proud to remain part of the community." BINJE was the first to report the move after the op-ed on NJ.com. Sullivan, meantime, said the building sales will take place over the next several years and emphasized that "Newark is our home and it will remain our global headquarters as we prepare Prudential for the future." Prudential Financial opened its new 20-story, 740,000-square-foot office tower in downtown Newark in 2015. - Courtesy: Prudential "Our Newark campus was built for a different version of Prudential," he wrote. "Today, RE-NJ has a different mix of businesses, a different workforce and different space needs. "Several of our buildings are underutilized. Keeping space we no longer need comes at a cost. By putting those resources to work elsewhere, we can invest more in the people, technology and capabilities that help us serve customers and meet their changing needs." The global financial services giant, perhaps the city's best-known corporate and philanthropic anchor, opened its 20-story Tower Building in August 2015 as an expansion of Newark campus and the home of some 3,000 employees. Developed on Prudential's behalf by SJP Properties, the glass-exterior structure achieved gold certification on the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design scale. The $444 million project was also one of the city's highest-profile commercial projects in decades and helped activate a stretch of Broad Street, paving the way for other development, including the mixed-use restoration of the historic Hahne & Co. building. As BINJE noted, Prudential's news follows PSEG's announcement earlier this year that it would sell its longtime tower at 80 Park Place and split operations across multiple locations. And, late last year, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey said it was weighing plans for a new ground-up headquarters in the city as NJ Transit looks to sell 1 and 3 Penn Plaza East, the longtime headquarters of both organizations before the agency moved to the nearby Gateway Two building. Joshua Burd. Joshua Burd, an award-winning reporter and editor, has been covering New Jersey commercial real estate for 13 years. Many industry leaders view him as the go-to real estate reporter in the state, a role he is eager to continue as the editor of Real Estate NJ.
