Requirements
  • A minimum of an Associate degree in Health Information Management or completion of an AHIMA or AAPC coding certification program is required for hospital coding.
  • For professional coding, a high school diploma or equivalent plus specialized training associated with a recognized coding certificate is required.
  • Hospital coding requires RHIA, RHIT, or CCS certification from AHIMA, or COC certification from AAPC.
  • Professional coding requires CPC certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders or CCS-P certification through the American Health Information Management Association.
  • At least 2 years of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPC outpatient coding assignment experience is required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications and computer skills is required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, medical record content and management, current ICD-10-CM and CPT Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, health information laws and regulations, patient confidentiality, and electronic medical records is required.
  • Working knowledge of structured data and database management through electronic medical record experience or education is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.
  • Strong written communication skills and adherence to department, hospital, and human resources policies are required.
  • OP Coder II-level ICD-10-CM and CPT outpatient code assignment skills based on the BILH OP Coder Exam are required.
Responsibilities
  • Review complete electronic and scanned medical records of discharged patients and assign ICD-10-CM, CPT/HCPC, and modifiers from the documentation.
  • Abstract coded data and patient information into the BILH coding abstracting system.
  • Apply official coding guidelines, AHA Coding Clinic advice, and facility-specific guidelines when coding outpatient records.
  • Sequence assigned codes using 3M software and apply coding principles for comprehensive coding and appropriate APC assignment.
  • Participate in training programs and educational sessions on ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPC coding guidelines and updates.
  • Identify and facilitate prompt resolution of documentation, abstracting, and account problems.
  • Review and code professional services, including surgeries and diagnostic services, using CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and modifiers; provide ICD-10-CM coding for missing diagnoses when needed.
  • Meet productivity and accuracy standards established by the manager.
  • Conduct prospective audits of provider-entered charges and provide feedback to providers.
  • Review codes periodically and when new, revised, or deleted code updates are introduced or required.
  • Respond accurately and promptly to questions from providers and other departments.
  • Review and analyze rejected professional-service claims and patient inquiries, and recommend appropriate coding when necessary.
  • Report findings from reviews and rejected claims as required by the manager.
  • Confer with physicians, qualified health care providers, clinical or ancillary managers, coders, and other staff about departmental and clinic-wide coding issues and updates.
  • Participate in new physician and care-provider orientation and provide follow-up reviews and education when applicable.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations and participate as the Professional Coding Department coding representative on Revenue Cycle Teams when requested.
  • Develop and conduct physician and care-provider documentation reviews in applicable areas.
  • Provide documentation feedback to physicians, qualified health care providers, department chairs, and administration.
  • Work with coding colleagues, medical staff, external facilities, provider practices, and vendors on coding, validation, education, training, process improvement, and knowledge-sharing activities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Cath, injection and infusion, observation, and ambulatory surgery coding.
  • Experience with Epic.
  • Experience with 3M-360 Computer Assisted Coding.

Beth Israel Lahey Health rolls out Heidi's AI scribing to all physicians after 90% report better patient presence

Beth Israel Lahey Health is rolling out Heidi's ambient AI scribing tool to all its physicians following a successful trial across its facilities. The health system, which serves over 6,000 providers across 14 hospitals and 175 primary care practices, prioritises addressing physician burnout, with nearly half of US physicians reporting burnout. During a six-month trial offering Heidi to 1,000 providers, the majority adopted the technology. Survey results showed 89% were satisfied with note quality, 90% felt more present with patients, 74% reduced after-hours work time, and 82% experienced reduced cognitive load during visits. The implementation demonstrates how ambient AI can deliver immediate relief to physicians whilst benefiting patients and the healthcare system. Heidi supports over 2 million consultations weekly globally and has raised $96.6 million from investors including Point72 Private Investments and Blackbird.
