About the Job

Requirements

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in high-voltage Protection and Control testing and commissioning is required.
  • A satisfactory background and motor vehicle record check is required.
  • Must pass pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and/or random drug testing.
  • Must maintain a questioning attitude and attention to detail in order to catch errors early and verify work.
  • Must remain calm under pressure and adapt to changing conditions in field environments.
  • Must demonstrate a mentorship mindset by developing junior engineers and reinforcing safe, high-quality work across the crew.
  • Must be customer-focused and committed to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Must maintain professional conduct and technical credibility in client-facing interactions.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel for documentation, reporting, and data tracking.
  • Must be able to work safely around energized electrical equipment and mechanical hazards, work in operational substations and construction environments, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work overtime and outage schedules as necessary and travel as required.

Responsibilities

  • Independently execute relay protection testing using Doble, Omicron, RTS, SEL AcSELerator, GE Enervista, and equivalent testing platforms.
  • Test and validate line, transformer, bus, feeder, breaker failure, reclosing, and transfer trip protection schemes, with Lead oversight for complex configurations.
  • Independently perform and validate current transformer and potential transformer testing, including ratio, polarity, phasing, saturation characteristics, and single-point grounding verification.
  • Execute complete relay input/output testing, analog-to-digital metering checks, and individual element pickup and timing tests, and make accurate pass/fail determinations.
  • Interpret relay logic, phasors, event reports, and oscillography to identify abnormal conditions and clearly communicate findings to the Lead.
  • Apply working knowledge of AC/DC power system fundamentals, complex power calculations, symmetrical components, relay element operation, protection zones and coordination philosophy, instrument transformer behavior and application, and overcurrent, differential, impedance, and breaker failure protection applications.
  • Read, interpret, and navigate one-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring and logic diagrams, cable schedules, and panel layouts.
  • Identify station phasing and equipment orientation from any location in the substation.
  • Support switching activities and outage coordination independently, and prepare projects through final pre-energization readiness, with Lead oversight required before actual energization.
  • Conduct testing scopes as system validation exercises rather than isolated component checks.
  • Engage with advanced internal training material and apply the learning to field assignments and commissioning scopes.
  • Develop test plans, isolation plans, energization plans, commissioning procedures, Human Performance mitigation plans, and job hazard analyses independently for assigned scopes, ensuring documents reflect the full protection scheme and operational risk profile.
  • Review full drawing packages before testing to identify design inconsistencies, relay logic concerns, and drawing errors for escalation before work begins.
  • Ensure testing aligns with utility standards, NETA practices, IEEE guidance, and client-specific commissioning requirements, and take ownership of standards compliance on assigned scopes.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and organized test records, redlines, and daily reports; support the Lead in reviewing results for operational correctness before client turnover.
  • Study complex protection schemes, SCADA integration, IEC 61850/GOOSE communications, and advanced relay platforms to build system-level knowledge for Lead-level work.
  • Seek exposure to project coordination, energization planning, and scope management under Lead mentorship in preparation for full project ownership.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of Protection and Control procedures and field standards.
  • Mentor Test Engineer II team members on protection testing techniques, drawing interpretation, relay logic, and developing independent field judgment.
  • Mentor Test Engineers on equipment identification, test set operation, documentation practices, and safe work execution.
  • Tailor coaching to each team member’s career stage, guiding Test Engineers toward Test Engineer II readiness and Test Engineer IIs toward Senior-level independence.
  • Reinforce safe work practices, Human Performance tool use, and verification culture within the crew through consistent modeling and direct feedback.
  • Provide constructive feedback to junior team members and communicate development observations to the Lead.
  • Contribute to a learning environment that encourages questions, treats mistakes as learning opportunities, and makes technical growth a shared team priority.
  • Support the Lead in monitoring scope changes and communicating field impacts.
  • Maintain and promote a safety-first culture in all work environments.
  • Adhere to Lock Out/Tag Out procedures and switching boundaries.
  • Use Human Performance Improvement tools to minimize operational risk.
  • Verify live-dead-live conditions and establish safe isolation boundaries.
  • Lead daily safety discussions, job hazard analysis reviews, and pre-job briefs.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, NERC CIP, utility requirements, and internal standards.
  • Support investigation and mitigation of operational or safety events when required.
  • Perform additional tasks as needed to support organizational goals and adapt to evolving business needs.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience commissioning substations from 12.5 kV through 765 kV.
  • Experience with SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, Westinghouse, or equivalent relay platforms.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Technology, an Associate degree in Electrical Technology, or related field experience.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and OSHA Electrical Safe Work Practices.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Familiarity with NERC CIP requirements.

About the Company

POWERX

Non-invasive sensors monitor and reduce energy

PowerX develops a home energy management system called the PowerX Energy Suite that uses non-invasive sensors to monitor water, electricity, and gas in real time. PowerX Water attaches to water heaters and main lines to measure flow and detect leaks, while PowerX Electricity clamps onto the circuit box to identify each appliance's energy signature; data go to a central hub and the PowerX Terra AI platform. The AI learns household patterns, provides personalized savings tips, can automate actions like adjusting a water heater, and alerts users to leaks or inefficiencies. The system installs without plumbing or wiring changes and is sold directly to homeowners with a claim of about six months ROI, aiming to lower utility bills and carbon footprint.
