Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • For Title I schools, meet the employment requirements outlined by the Every Student Succeeds Act and have either six documented semester hours of coursework in early childhood education or two years of work experience in an early childhood setting.
  • Maintain Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification through the required renewal process; training will be provided if needed.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and Google Apps.
  • Have working knowledge of successful instructional delivery methods, general classroom activities, and classroom routines.
  • Protect the confidentiality of personally identifiable information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and applicable laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate clearly in oral and written form using varied communication techniques and tools.
  • Motivate students and monitor and supervise their safety and well-being.
  • Recognize and support students with varied backgrounds, abilities, exceptionalities, behavioral needs, and learning styles.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, students, parents, businesses, community agencies, and the public.
  • Perform medium physical work, including occasionally exerting up to 50 pounds of force, frequently up to 25 pounds, and constantly up to 10 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Support and assist teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students, including work related to students’ Individualized Education Plans, while maintaining an encouraging, caring, safe, and healthful environment.
  • Assist teachers with strategies for implementing students’ behavioral intervention plans.
  • Assist with planning, organizing, and evaluating instructional activities; developing classroom procedures; and preparing materials according to lesson-plan needs.
  • Provide in-class support while promoting student progress toward independence and self-determination.
  • Assist teachers with implementing low- and high-tech assistive technology and augmentative communication devices to meet class-wide and individual student needs.
  • Compile, maintain, and file reports, records, and required documents while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participate in district staff development and continued professional growth in the assigned area.
  • Coordinate, assist, and facilitate student transitions between classes.
  • Assist students with special health care needs, including personal hygiene, restroom functions, diapering, mobility assistance, lifting, positioning, transferring, seizure control activities, feeding, and adaptive equipment.
  • Provide behavioral assistance using Crisis Prevention and Intervention skills.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • For SATA assignments, serve as a one-on-one instructional assistant to a student with severe to profound learning disabilities and complete specialized training determined by the student’s Individualized Education Plan.
Desired Qualifications
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs, including physical, emotional, behavioral, or learning disabilities or impairments requiring specialized services or accommodations.
