Requirements
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Successful completion of an accredited medical assistant program, certification as a Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, or Registered Medical Assistant, or eligibility to take the Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant examination with certification obtained within six months of hire is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
  • Knowledge of clinical skills required for medical assistant certification or registration is required.
  • Effective problem-solving and prioritization skills are required.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, doctors, and other staff is required.
  • The ability to maintain patient confidentiality and process information confidentially is required.
  • The ability to work independently and function as an integral team member with other healthcare professionals is required.
  • Personal computer skills and the ability to input and retrieve data from the organization's computerized systems are required.
  • The ability to maintain positive customer service and establish effective working relationships with physicians, office staff, and employees in a team environment is required.
  • The role requires considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of objects weighing 20 pounds or less, assistance with lifting and moving patients, and occasional physically fatiguing positions and motions.
Responsibilities
  • Provide clerical support to the Cancer Center under provider or nursing direction, including obtaining patient records, rescheduling patients, and triaging phone calls.
  • Room patients, provide clinical information, and support providers and nurses.
  • Process and post information to patient charges and educate patients and families about care.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, including patient assessments, histories, vital signs, and medication reconciliation.
  • Document pertinent and required information accurately in patient charts.
  • Maintain documentation standards and review charts before appointments to ensure previously ordered tests are completed and reports are present.
  • Investigate the need to reschedule appointments when required testing is incomplete and scan documents into charts before scheduled visits for provider review.
  • Set up and assist physicians with limited procedures, including Pap and pelvic procedures.
  • Schedule outside tests and procedures for patients in other departments or facilities, such as X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging.
  • Prepare patients for tests and procedures by providing appropriate instructions.
  • Stock examination rooms with supplies as needed.
  • Conduct daily inventory of supplies and report items that need to be ordered.
  • Assist with scheduling and rescheduling appointments in the electronic medical record system.
  • Screen calls and determine urgency, appointment necessity, or whether telephone advice is sufficient.
  • Attend required staff, educational, and other meetings.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by nurses, the practice manager, or physician.
Desired Qualifications
  • Electronic medical record experience is highly desirable.
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills are desirable.
