Requirements
  • At least 7 years of experience building production software, including hands-on experience shipping software for use in a clinical trial.
  • Familiarity with clinical systems and data flows and with the operational realities of delivering software into an active trial environment.
  • Familiarity with software delivery in a regulated or controlled environment, including GxP/GCP, computer system validation, requirements traceability, audit trails, electronic signatures, and change control.
  • Ability to translate regulatory requirements into software that is compliant and well engineered.
  • Ability to write clean, maintainable code and apply distributed systems and cloud fundamentals using Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure.
  • Daily experience building with large language models, agentic workflows, and retrieval pipelines, with interest in applying them responsibly to regulated clinical work.
  • Track record of technical ownership at senior scope, including multi-quarter efforts, cross-functional dependencies, and designs implemented by other engineers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-engineers, including clinical operations and quality assurance stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively in an ambiguous and changing environment.
Responsibilities
  • Drive and own the design, delivery, and operation of production software used in live clinical trials, from site startup and activation through data collection, monitoring, and close-out.
  • Coordinate clinical, regulatory, data, and infrastructure partners to resolve cross-functional dependencies and take software from technical design through validated use in active trials.
  • Build within a validated software development life cycle by partnering with quality assurance and computer system validation experts to translate validation requirements into traceable, testable software.
  • Improve engineering workflows that make compliant delivery efficient and predictable.
  • Design and ship artificial intelligence-native trial execution capabilities, including agents and pipelines that read clinical and operational source data to surface signals, discrepancies, and tasks with provenance, audit trails, and human review.
  • Build integrations across electronic data capture, clinical trial management systems, electronic trial master file systems, contract research organization and laboratory data feeds, and safety systems.
  • Turn fragmented clinical-system inputs into a coherent, queryable picture of a trial.
  • Own trial-specific domain logic and software built on clinical data, partnering with Data Engineering on shared ingestion, orchestration, warehouse, quality, and governance capabilities.
  • Build tooling that allows traditionally sequential trial activities to start earlier or run in parallel.
  • Recognize when GxP considerations apply and involve quality assurance and validation partners early in decisions.
  • Translate quality assurance and validation requirements into practical engineering approaches.
  • Set technical direction, review designs, mentor engineers and other builders, and build guardrails and automation that enable the organization to move quickly and safely.

What believers are saying

  • January 29, 2026 Kenmare Bio in-licensed FHND5032, expanding autoimmune pipeline depth.
  • June 9, 2026 BLKR201 dosing created a near-term early-2027 catalyst.
  • Formation Bio raised $372 million in Series D, supporting pipeline and AI expansion.

What critics are saying

  • BLKR201 remains unproven; early-2027 readout determines whether Formation Bio justifies its model.
  • FHND5032 and BLKR201 concentrate value in two assets; one failure crushes leverage.
  • Without repeat clinical wins, Formation Bio becomes a costly AI wrapper around failed bets.

What makes Formation Bio unique

  • Formation Bio pairs AI software with clinical asset ownership, not pure-platform licensing.
  • July 22, 2026 hire Michael Ehlers strengthens translational and clinical development credibility.
  • June 9, 2026 BLKR201 entered Phase 1 five months after in-licensing.
