Requirements
  • High school education or equivalent, and/or equivalent training for a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist or California Specialty (Limited) License.
  • Organization and time-management skills.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with physicians, staff, and professionals in multiple settings and locations and to promote diversity in the workplace.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license or a Limited license from the State of California.
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City); if not held upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained through renewal before expiration.
Responsibilities
  • Perform manual, semi-automated, and automated biochemical, hematological, microbiological, and/or Blood Bank analyses on varied patient specimens while maintaining accuracy, reliability, and productivity.
  • Recognize normal, abnormal, unusual, and critical results and take appropriate action according to laboratory policy, including consideration of patient age.
  • Use clerical and computer functions to communicate results and perform additional clinical and clerical duties for the Department.
  • Make results available within defined turnaround-time guidelines.
  • Communicate and interact with co-workers, guests of the Institution, and hospital clinical staff.
  • Maintain professional growth and development.
  • Participate in the Department’s Quality Assurance Program and continuing education sessions.
  • Help monitor supply levels, communicate needed supplies to the supervisor, and assist with inventory monitoring as assigned.
  • Assist in training personnel.
  • Perform responsibilities independently, organize and prioritize work, and assist others when work is caught up.
  • Follow safety and infection-control guidelines and use personal protective equipment as required.
  • Cover the laboratory during emergencies and difficult staffing situations.
  • Obtain specimens from designated patients as necessary.
  • Follow established Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain theoretical and working knowledge of procedures and instrumentation in assigned areas and understand the clinical significance of each test performed.
  • Identify and correct problems that may adversely affect test performance or result reporting.
  • Perform and document calibration, maintenance, and quality control according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of prior experience and/or CLS training involving specialized and complex analysis, quality control, calibration, QC evaluation, inventory control, preventative maintenance, and quality improvement related to the Clinical Laboratory field.
  • ASCP Certification.
