OpenAI appoints US AI adviser Paul Christiano to nonprofit board amid growing safety concerns

OpenAI has appointed Paul Christiano to its nonprofit board. Christiano, a technical adviser to the US government and prominent safety researcher, joins at a time of heightened concerns about AI risks. The appointment adds expertise in AI safety to OpenAI's governance structure. Christiano previously worked as a researcher focused on making AI systems more aligned with human values and intentions. His addition to the board comes as policymakers and technology companies face mounting pressure to address potential dangers associated with rapidly advancing artificial intelligence capabilities.

OpenAI's Luna undercuts Chinese AI on price as enterprise revenue jumps 32%

OpenAI's lower-cost Luna model is now cheaper to deploy than Chinese open-source alternatives run through cloud providers, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar said at Goldman Sachs' conference in San Francisco. An 80% price cut drove a roughly 10-fold increase in Luna usage. The company is targeting chip design, life sciences, and financial services with specialised AI workflows. Enterprise revenue climbed 32% between June and July, outpacing the 20% annualised growth across the business. OpenAI used its own models to develop the Jalapeño chip in under nine months. Developed jointly with Broadcom, the inference processor shows cost savings of roughly 50% compared with typical AI graphics processing units, with initial deployment targeted for late 2026.

OpenAI deepens Samsung ties on next-generation chips and enterprise AI services

OpenAI is deepening cooperation with Samsung Electronics on next-generation chip development, the company's Korea general manager said at a Seoul press conference on Wednesday. Harrison Kim said Samsung is among OpenAI's most advanced partnerships in chip production and research, though he provided no further details. Samsung Electronics could not confirm the information. OpenAI unveiled its first custom AI chip, Jalapeno, in June with Broadcom, with Taiwan's TSMC manufacturing the chips. Samsung and SK Hynix signed letters of intent last year to supply memory chips for OpenAI's Stargate data centre project. Kim said demand for memory chips would grow as more advanced computing requires faster, more complex chips. ChatGPT Enterprise users at South Korean companies surged 28-fold by end-August year-on-year, OpenAI said.

OpenAI launches ChatGPT Images 2.5, slashing latency up to 50%

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Images 2.5, which improves multi-turn editing consistency and reduces image generation latency by up to 50% compared with Images 2.0. The company also introduced two new application programming interface models, GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst. OpenAI said people create more than 3 billion images each week across ChatGPT Images and GPT-Image API models. The system retains safeguards including prompt and image checks, C2PA metadata, and invisible watermarking. C2PA, or Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, is part of a broader provenance standard that uses metadata to show a file's source and integrity. Using both metadata and invisible watermarks can help platforms identify synthetic media.

OpenAI's ChatGPT-6 Astra launch sparks memory-chip stock rally as AI spending continues

OpenAI's launch of its ChatGPT-6 Astra model last week revitalised investor interest in memory-chip stocks. Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Kioxia posted strong gains on Monday as enthusiasm from US semiconductor stocks spilled into Asian markets. Astra is designed to handle more complex tasks, boosting optimism about demand for high-bandwidth memory and graphics processing units. Analysts believe the launch supports continued AI spending, with frontier AI models remaining extremely compute-intensive. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley estimate that of the expected $1.3-1.5 trillion in AI capital expenditure planned for 2027, more than half will be devoted to memory. The iShares Semiconductor Index jumped 3.5% on Friday, bringing its year-to-date return to 72%.
