Requirements
  • Knowledge of child development and developmental patterns for children ages 3–5 years.
  • Knowledge of oral and written English and grammar, basic arithmetic, preschool developmental needs, early childhood development methods, health, safety and nutritional requirements, cooperation with teachers, children and parents, and the goals of early childhood education and family development.
  • Ability to learn and apply curriculum methods and procedures at MAAC Head Start.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Twelve college units, including core units, from an accredited college or university in Early Childhood Education or Child Development.
  • California Child Development Associate Teacher Permit or California Child Development Associate credential.
  • Valid CPR, First Aid and Food Handlers Cards must be obtained within the first two months of employment and maintained throughout employment.
  • Must complete a physical examination, tuberculosis clearance, drug screen, and required influenza, pertussis and measles immunization documentation before the first day of employment.
  • Must maintain a valid California driver's license, use a personal insured vehicle daily, and maintain a motor vehicle driving record acceptable to MAAC's insurance carrier.
  • Must obtain a current criminal background check clearance, sign a criminal record statement, and sign an Acknowledgement to Report Child Abuse form before the first day of employment.
  • Must meet the physical requirements of the role, including standing, walking, sitting, bending, crawling, climbing or balancing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Provide input and assistance with daily classroom activities and lesson plans.
  • Assist in designing and implementing classroom activities to meet the needs of each child.
  • Assist in implementing the approved curriculum and multicultural education.
  • Assist with classroom arrangement and related physical requirements to provide a safe, healthy, interesting and enjoyable learning environment.
  • Develop and maintain an open, friendly and informative relationship with parents and volunteers.
  • Assist in interpreting and explaining Head Start policies, programs and principles.
  • Record individual children's behavior and observations on appropriate record-keeping forms.
  • Provide growth and learning experiences for each child in relation to the child's cultural and socioeconomic background.
  • Perform accurate numerical counts, including attendance and meal counts.
  • Assist in maintaining classroom cleanliness and setting up and maintaining the classroom lunch area.
  • Assist with laundry and other maintenance duties and supervise children on the bus as needed.
  • Assist with home visits at times convenient to parents.
  • Assist in developing an Individual Family Plan for each child and family beginning at enrollment and updating it at least three times during the school year.
  • Attend mandated training programs, conferences and meetings.
  • Ensure personalized special services are provided to children with special needs, including feeding, toileting, diapering, catheterization, urine-bag support and physically carrying children when required.
  • Assist in developing individual education plans and teaching.
  • Provide an environment that facilitates children's growth and positive self-image.
  • Interact with management, administrators, staff, teachers, parents, family members and children while performing the work.
Desired Qualifications

  • Bilingual Spanish and English ability.
  • One year of Head Start experience with children in a classroom setting.
  • One year of preschool experience with children in a classroom setting.
