About the Job

Requirements

  • Seven or more years in data engineering, or backend engineering with deep data ownership.
  • Experience designing, building from scratch, and personally operating at least one cloud-native data platform in production.
  • Enterprise-scale data lake, lakehouse, or warehouse experience, including ownership of schema, storage, and partitioning decisions.
  • Expert SQL and dimensional modeling skills, including the ability to design models that accommodate changing business needs and explain metric definitions to non-technical executives.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including version control, testing, continuous integration and continuous delivery, code review, and infrastructure as code.
  • Experience building reliable extract, transform, and load or extract, load, and transform pipelines across operational databases, imperfect software-as-a-service application programming interfaces, and telemetry streams.
  • A track record supporting executive reporting where the accuracy of metrics had significant consequences.
  • Hands-on experience with a modern cloud data stack, including Synapse, Databricks, or Snowflake.
  • Fluency with artificial-intelligence-native engineering tools and agentic workflows, such as terminal-native coding agents, large-language-model-assisted code refactoring, and data pipeline generation.
  • Ability to select appropriate architecture strategically while remaining hands-on and shipping the work.

Responsibilities

  • Own the data platform end to end, including architecture, ingestion, modeling, orchestration, testing, cost, and reliability, and make build-versus-buy decisions.
  • Unify Azure SQL Server, TimescaleDB, HubSpot, Zendesk, Acumatica, and sensor telemetry into a modeled, documented, queryable layer that serves as the company source of truth.
  • Own data reliability through data contracts, freshness and quality service-level agreements, lineage, observability, and the on-call rotation.
  • Build infrastructure for customer-facing analytics, application programming interfaces, benchmarking, and historical datasets using weather observations, sensor telemetry, environmental conditions, alerts, and operational events, with multi-tenant security from the first release.
  • Build pipelines and centralized datasets for internal artificial intelligence agents and large language model workflows, and partner with department leaders to automate repetitive work.
  • Define data modeling, change review, and decision-documentation standards for future data engineers.
  • Help hire the next data engineers.
  • Work directly with Finance, Revenue, Customer Experience, Product, and executive teams to understand their decisions and design data solutions for them.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with time-series or geospatial data at scale.
  • Experience with Internet of Things or sensor telemetry pipelines.
  • Experience with streaming architectures such as Kafka, Event Hubs, or Flink.
  • Experience building customer-facing or monetized data products.
  • Experience with dbt and modern orchestration tooling.
  • Experience with vertical software for physical, traditional, or safety-critical industries.
