$2M philanthropic investment will help Charlotte cultivate new tech talent to keep pace with city's growth. CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 16, 2026 /3BL/ - National nonprofit CodePath today announced a $2 million philanthropic investment from Wells Fargo and the Wells Fargo Foundation to accelerate the number of local college students who are prepared to participate in Charlotte's growing technology economy. "We believe Charlotte can be a national example of how to prepare students for the future of work," said Michael Ellison, Co-Founder and CEO of CodePath, which delivers industry-aligned programs at more than 700 U.S. colleges across the country. "Together with Wells Fargo, this philanthropic investment will unlock pathways to economic mobility for students and their families while strengthening the region's tech ecosystem." In the span of just five years, Charlotte's tech sector has grown nearly twenty percent - far outpacing national averages. Some of the largest tech companies including Apple, Microsoft and IBM, in the U.S. have opened hubs in the city. "Preparing the next generation for the future of work is essential to helping our communities and our economy grow," said Bonnie Wallace, Head of Financial Health Philanthropy at Wells Fargo. "Through our support of CodePath and local universities, we are expanding access to high-quality training and career pathways so more students can build in-demand skills and participate in Charlotte's rapidly growing technology economy." Designed to meet the growing need for tech talent in the region, the new collaboration will embed CodePath's courses, career services, and interview preparation in the computing programs at University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) and HBCU Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU). Participating students will build in-demand technical skills including AI, software engineering, cybersecurity, and mobile development to propel them into employment opportunities in the city's fastest-growing industries. In addition, the program will build direct hiring pipelines with top Charlotte employers. The courses will serve an initial cohort of 300 students, with the aim of serving up to 2,000 students each year by 2028. Howard University teams up with industry experts to launch transformative applied AI course. In a new collaboration between CodePath, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and Howard University, Howard's Intro to Artificial Intelligence course reimagines preparation for leading-edge engineering roles through hands-on, industry-aligned training. WASHINGTON, D.C. - Howard University today announced a transformative redesign of its trailblazing Intro to Artificial Intelligence course, which has pioneered the preparation of students for emerging careers in AI-powered engineering for more than a decade. Developed in partnership with CodePath and supported by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), the redesigned course uses methodology underscored by recent CodePath data to introduce students to the fundamentals of AI-assisted software development and provide hands-on experience for its application in real-world workflows that are ubiquitous in entry-level roles. According to a survey released by CodePath last month, employers' top readiness signals are internship experience, technical interview performance, and side projects or portfolios. "Howard has a long history of preparing students to not just succeed in today's jobs, but to become leaders in the economy of tomorrow," said Kimberly L. Jones, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture at Howard University. "Building on many years of introducing students to traditional AI concepts, this course has been reimagined to reflect AI's ongoing evolution and respond to what our students are asking for, and what employers now expect. By embedding applied AI directly into the curriculum, students who have successfully completed the class have both the foundational knowledge and the practical experience to lead in an AI-driven world of work." Employers are increasingly in search of and willing to pay a premium for workers with the skills to apply AI on the job. Businesses also place particular value on hands-on experience. Built to respond to this growing demand, Howard's Intro to Artificial Intelligence course is collaboratively taught by Howard faculty and an instructor from CodePath's industry-connected faculty network. It focuses on topics ranging from data structures to AI literacy and agentic workflows. By the end of the course, students will complete a portfolio-ready project demonstrating their ability to apply AI responsibly and effectively within real software development contexts. Intro to Artificial Intelligence represents the first time this course, originally developed by CodePath, is being offered for academic credit. The Work of Opportunity in the Age of AI. A national imperative: ensuring and expanding opportunity at scale. Friends and colleagues, The speed with which AI is remaking its society is breathtaking - and so is the scale of change it's expected to bring. Many predict that it will replace millions of jobs, including the middle-class jobs once seen as stable and reliably rewarding. The implications of these predictions for Americans are profound. It sounds dark. But I am fundamentally an optimist, a believer in the ability of this country to solve confounding problems. Anthropic has partnered with computer science education organisation CodePath to provide Claude and Claude Code to over 20,000 students at community colleges, state schools and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. More than 40 per cent of CodePath students come from families earning less than $50,000 annually. CodePath will integrate Claude into programming courses to give students experience building projects with AI tools and contributing to open source projects. The company claims pilot testing has shown positive results, with students reporting the tool helped them learn new programming languages. The partnership follows similar education initiatives by OpenAI, Meta and Google, as AI companies seek to build brand loyalty amongst students. Anthropic says it will collaborate with CodePath on research into how AI is changing education and economic opportunities in computing.
Maryland expands tech workforce training through Bowie State partnership. Through a new partnership, Maryland is working to grow its tech workforce. The Maryland Higher Education Commission and the Maryland Department of Labor have launched a partnership between CodePath and Bowie State University to expand technology career opportunities and strengthen the state's cybersecurity workforce, the labor department announced Monday. CodePath, a national nonprofit that integrates computer science courses into college degree programs, will collaborate with Bowie State to provide advanced training in software engineering, cybersecurity, and related fields. Expanding opportunities in tech. The program aims to provide free training to at least 800 students in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. Working with partner universities, the initiative targets 60% to 80% of CodePath students securing technical internships or job placements in areas such as software engineering and cybersecurity, the labor department said. Maryland Labor Secretary Portia Wu said the collaboration meets employer demand while supporting student success. "By joining forces with education and industry partners, we are not only helping students to complete their education, but also ensuring they gain the hands-on experience that employers demand," Wu said. "This will prepare them to move into good jobs in a dynamic and increasingly technology-enabled economy." Building Maryland's tech pipeline. The partnership comes as Maryland makes investments in the quantum industry. In April, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced a partnership this week with the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to invest $100 million in the state's quantum industry. Quantum mechanics involves the behavior of light and matter, according to the Britannica encyclopedia. The science of quantum mechanics can be used to build quantum computers, which can be significantly faster than traditional computing systems when solving problems.
