Requirements
  • Eight years of commercial lines underwriting experience handling large or complex accounts.
  • Knowledge of complex commercial lines underwriting policies, practices and procedures; insurance law; and underwriting and marketing principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Standard Bureau Rating plans and catastrophe management concepts.
  • Knowledge of alternative rating methods and plans and pricing theory.
  • Knowledge of treaty and facultative reinsurance.
  • Knowledge of regulatory issues, the wholesale broker system, market conditions and company operations.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of authority and judgment with minimal direction.
  • Travel is required.
  • An undergraduate degree is preferred, although equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Responsibilities
  • Research and develop new classes of business, including researching market trends and competition, assessing market viability, creating forms and endorsements, and developing rates with actuarial support.
  • Review individual risks with assigned brokers and accept or decline business based on the information necessary to make the decision.
  • Analyze exposures to loss, develop adequate premium charges, determine endorsements and exclusions, and develop manuscript wording appropriate to the risk.
  • Place reinsurance, when applicable, within department guidelines and maintain relationships with reinsurers.
  • Achieve production and loss-ratio goals with assigned brokers through broker management and marketing.
  • Analyze premium and loss results by broker, state and major class of business, assess submission quality, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Oversee or handle policy maintenance and mid-term requests, including reviewing endorsement requests and authorizing policy changes.
  • Review loss-control reports and recommendations, partner with brokers on loss-control compliance, follow up on outstanding information, and review claim activity.
  • Foster business relationships with brokers, resolve broker conflicts, and travel to broker offices for training or marketing visits as required.
  • Assist with marketing ideas and strategies for underwriting events and campaigns.
  • Resolve highly complex technical questions.
  • Develop technical and business knowledge through internal and external venues.
  • Teach classes to brokers, SSU students and other underwriters, and mentor new and existing underwriting talent.
  • Supervise up to three direct reports.
Desired Qualifications
  • Excess and surplus lines experience.
  • Completion of general insurance courses or designations such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, Certified Insurance Counselor, Associate in Commercial Underwriting, Associate in Risk Management, Certified Professional Insurance Woman, Chartered Workers Insurance Specialist, or Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance.
  • Undergraduate degree.
