What believers are saying

  • Growth is steady: July 2026 results showed second-quarter revenue up 13% to $12.6 billion, with a 33.4% operating margin.
  • Advertising is scaling fast: in July 2026, Netflix forecast ad revenue roughly doubling to about $3 billion this year.
  • Pay aims high: Netflix's culture memo says it pays each person's personal top of market for role and location.

What critics are saying

  • Cuts are on the table: Puck reported in October 2026 that Netflix is weighing layoffs of about 5% of staff.
  • The performance bar is unforgiving: managers apply a keeper test, asking whether they would fight to keep each employee.
  • YouTube draws more TV viewing: figures reported in October 2026 put it at 14.2% of TV time, Netflix at 7.8%.

What makes Netflix unique

  • Scale is its moat: Netflix passed 325 million paid memberships by the end of 2025, serving nearly a billion viewers.

Netflix cut 1,000 jobs and its content chief; opinion says dignity in firings matters

Netflix cut roughly 1,000 jobs last week and replaced chief content officer Bela Bajaria, who spent nearly a decade helping build the streaming service into a global entertainment powerhouse. Peter Rice, her successor, was himself abruptly dismissed from Disney in 2022 by then-chief executive officer Bob Chapek, who was fired months later. A Fortune commentary argues that corporate America is treating departing staff too coldly. It cites Columbia Business School research finding that layoffs seen as unfair weaken the commitment of remaining employees. A 2023 study of Airbnb's layoffs found that staff who saw the process as unfair reported less trust in management, lower job satisfaction, and more cynicism. The author says respect, honest communication, and a chance to say goodbye cost little and may pay off as artificial intelligence reshapes work.

Chamath calls Netflix "a dormant subscription" as $20B content bill outweighs $14B debt

Netflix shares fell after its October 20 third-quarter report, when it guided fourth-quarter revenue below Wall Street's estimates and cut its 2026 ad revenue outlook to about $2.7 billion from $3 billion. The stock was already down 26% in 2026. Investor Chamath Palihapitiya, founder of Social Capital, called Netflix "a dormant subscription" and said $14 billion of debt financed its content library. YouTube, he argued, creates content far more cheaply. The debt looks manageable. Netflix ended September with $15.3 billion of gross debt and $8.2 billion of cash, and expects about $12 billion of free cash flow this year. The bigger risk is a content bill of about $20 billion this year, paid before anyone watches. YouTube pays creators a share of revenue only after it comes in.

Xbox reportedly asked Netflix for $800 million for 7-year movie and TV exclusivity deal.

Xbox reportedly asked Netflix for $800 million for 7-year movie and TV exclusivity deal. Pay more. Xbox reportedly asked Netflix for $800 million for a seven-year deal that would have given the streamer exclusive adaptations based on its games. Details on the behind-the-scenes dealings between the two entertainment giants came from a Puck report. The site stated that Netflix, interested in pursuing movie and TV adaptations for some of Microsoft's biggest games, began its offer at $500 million. What exactly the deal would have yielded outside of the promise to exclusively-licensed Xbox titles for adaptations is unclear, but for Microsoft, it was worth a lot more than what Netflix was willing to offer. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and her team countered the offer at a staggering $800 million. Following a round of shakeups at Netflix from last week, the deal is said to be completely off the table. It's unclear what exactly led to the deal breaking down, though Puck suggested the exit of Bela Bajaria, who served as content chief until being fired recently, played a role. Now, the site said that Xbox is "pursuing smaller deals with more partners." Who those partners are is a mystery for now. While Xbox and Netflix were unable to secure a long-term exclusivity deal, both entertainment entities do have plans to work together in the future. A live-action movie and animated series based on Gears of War, for example, have been in the works for some time. In 2024, Netflix announced it was building a Minecraft animated series, and just last month, plans for an animated Diablo series were confirmed. Xbox shared a statement with Puck: "We have received record-breaking interest in our IP; Netflix is a valued partner and we are excited for the forthcoming release of our Minecraft and Diablo animated series together, among other adaptations." Netflix announced layoffs impacting around 1,000 staff earlier this month. A few high-profile executives, including Bajaria, were fired just days later. The list also included head of film Dan Lin, who reportedly recently clashed with Barbie director Greta Gerwig about the release of her upcoming Netflix film, Narnia: The Magician's Nephew. Whether Xbox can find partners for more movie and TV adaptations remains to be seen, but considering its newly established entertainment division, XP, was announced just weeks ago, it definitely seems like something the company wants to keep in mind going forward. In the meantime, you can check out what IGN thought of a few other recent video game adaptations. Capcom's Street Fighter movie, for example, received a 6/10 review, while its Resident Evil movie managed to earn an 8/10. What's the worst video game movie of all time? Follow IGN deals on X. Possible Love' offers four of the year's best performances in Lee Chang-dong's class-conscious drama

Lee Chang-dong's new drama, Possible Love, follows two couples who meet during the filming of a documentary. It opens in select cinemas Friday and begins streaming on Netflix on November 6. It is the director's first film in eight years, since the thriller Burning. Inspired by a 2009 incident in which a Korean car factory laid off one-third of its workforce, it is set in an industrial town two years after a similar tragedy. Sul Kyung-gu plays Ho-seok, a laid-off welder who has become an alcoholic. Jeon Do-yeon plays his wife, Mi-ok, who agrees to be interviewed by Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), an aspiring filmmaker. Zo In-sung plays Ye-ji's husband. The film examines class, power and documentary ethics. The reviewer calls its four lead performances among the year's best.
