Requirements
  • Must currently possess appropriate certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) from the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • A bachelor's degree in a Biological Sciences-related field and 2–5 years of laboratory experience are required.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and the ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation.
  • Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results and to interpret and apply complex written instructions.
  • English language proficiency.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders during the work shift; lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist; lift up to 20 lbs; carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance; and push or pull with 30 lbs of force.
Responsibilities
  • Evaluate specimen suitability for analysis and request a new specimen when the specimen is unusable.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis while ensuring that their physiologic state and properties are maintained.
  • Select, perform, evaluate, and monitor test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques according to established protocols; recognize and respond to malfunction indicators and implement corrections.
  • Conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products, and maintain records for quality control reports.
  • Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain trained instruments; verify instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks and monitoring; identify causes of common problems and make simple repairs.
  • Evaluate data validity in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures, and correlate quantitative data with patient data, such as history and medications, to verify results.
  • Perform additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results; recognize abnormal results requiring immediate physician attention and report them directly.
  • Generate laboratory results from the work area into the laboratory computer system, and edit and verify results recorded in the system.
  • Communicate, consult, and interact with the Laboratory Director, Laboratory Supervisor, and other healthcare team members.
  • Apply knowledge of laboratory operations and their relationship to the organization to solve testing, quality, or customer service problems.
