Requirements
  • Current undergraduate or graduate student with a 3.0 GPA or higher required.
  • Interns must be enrolled in a college/university or a Master’s/PhD program for the duration of the internship.
  • Effective verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills to deal with multiple projects and priorities.
  • Responsible for maintaining confidential information to the highest degree.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suites and applicable BCBSM systems.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Programming proficiency in SQL and/or Python for data extraction, manipulation, and analysis.
  • Understanding of data warehousing and data mining concepts including ETL, data mart design and architecture, fact tables and dimension tables, data views and OLAP, data models such as star schemas and snowflake schemas.
  • Data analysis skills including identifying and quantifying data patterns and trends, recognizing potential issues and developing solutions, standardizing, harmonizing, cleaning, and preparing data for analysis and reporting.
  • Knowledge of healthcare data concepts such as epidemiologic principles, population health management concepts, healthcare terminology and plan/benefit design, administrative claims data and standard coding schemes (ICD-9/10, HCPCS)
Responsibilities
  • Assist in preparing information and research materials to identify business problems, offer recommendations and assist management with implementation of solutions.
  • Support leaders on projects designed to enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.
  • Develop and maintain a solid understanding of BCBSM business, products, programs, data, organizational structure, controls, research.
  • Analyze business goals, objectives, and needs within the organization.
  • Participate in networking events with BCBSM leaders and other interns.
  • Engage in volunteer activities/community outreach to build knowledge of our communities and customers.
  • Participate in department meetings and events (i.e. monthly Diversity and Inclusion events, department wide team building events, weekly meetings to ensure team alignment, etc.).
  • Collaborating on Data-Driven Projects: Participate in projects that require data solutions, working closely with colleagues to design and implement effective data-driven approaches.
  • Providing Technical Expertise: Leverage your programming and data skills to support simple to moderately complex projects and ad-hoc requests, delivering high-quality solutions that meet business needs.
  • Effective Communication: Present data insights and solutions to internal and external stakeholders in a clear, logical, and engaging manner, ensuring that complex information is easily understood.
  • Data Stewardship: Standardize, harmonize, and cleanse data to ensure accuracy and consistency, sharing it with colleagues and external partners to drive informed decision-making.
  • Data-Centric Solution Development: Design, develop, and maintain data-driven product solutions that support provider risk-based programs, enhancing our ability to deliver high-quality services.
  • Reporting and Analytics: Support reporting activities, continually seeking opportunities to streamline processes and improve end-user experience through intuitive and user-friendly reporting.
  • Ad-Hoc Requests: Respond to special requests for data and analytics, providing timely and accurate support to business stakeholders.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Enterprise IT and clinical data experts to maintain and enhance our clinical programs data assets, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance.
Desired Qualifications
  • Master of Science degree in a related field preferred.
  • Experience with SQL and Python in data analysis contexts is preferred but not required if covered under requirements.
  • Masters degree in data science, health informatics, or related field preferred.
  • Healthcare knowledge in epidemiologic principles, population health management concepts, healthcare terminology and plan/benefit design, and administrative claims data with ICD-9/10, HCPCS coding schemes is preferred.
