Requirements
- For the nurse practitioner pathway, graduation from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing is required.
- For the nurse practitioner pathway, national certification by a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center is required.
- For the nurse practitioner pathway, licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia is required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- For the physician assistant pathway, a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is required.
- For the physician assistant pathway, graduation from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- For the physician assistant pathway, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- For the physician assistant pathway, licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine is required.
- The role requires the ability to provide healthcare services consistent with state law, professional licensing or certification authority requirements, and applicable hospital privileges.
- The role requires proficiency with computers.
- The role requires the ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, position, stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- The role requires working closely with others, protracted or irregular hours, and environments involving biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients within the scope of practice and specialty area.
- Coordinate medical and surgical specialty-team involvement to develop comprehensive patient plans.
- Review plans of care with clinical-team members and participate in directing care.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and perioperative services.
- Coordinate ambulatory management, discharge planning, and follow-up when applicable.
- Participate in educating residents and medical and nursing students.
- Manage comprehensive, individualized care for hospitalized patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization and immediate post-discharge planning.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with hospitalist faculty or under established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate results according to clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff about abnormal patient-evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate discharge by coordinating services and tests required for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Develop individualized inpatient care plans, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare-team members.
- Identify unstable or complex inpatient-care situations and facilitate appropriate interventions.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate general medicine patients and coordinate follow-up, procedures, and tests in the ambulatory setting when applicable.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage patient and family needs.
- Use patient-care equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
- Promote an environment that supports patient and family learning preferences, priorities, and readiness.
- Maintain and update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for hospitalized patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature when appropriate.
- Document care plans, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient’s medical record according to approved hospital and West Virginia University Medicine policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve improvements in patient outcomes and care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in the cardiology practice that improve patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to support problem-solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
- Serve as a professional role model.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role of inpatient and ambulatory care delivery.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports when appropriate.
- Review and interpret cardiology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist Hospitalist Faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Acute care or hospitalist experience is preferred.
- Advanced Clinical Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner qualification is preferred, although Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
- Master’s-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is preferred.
