Virtual idols are closing off young people's last public space, as Shizuku raised $15M

An essay in 36Kr argues that virtual idols are closing off the last public space left to young people in East Asia, where fandom doubles as political activity. Fan groups' shared colours, organisation and online campaigns mirror political campaigns, it says, but lead nowhere. Human idols remain a loophole, the author argues, because some gain real influence. Virtual idols remove that risk. Rainbow Corporation's February 5, 2024 termination of VTuber Selen Tatsuki, which preceded a 13% share drop in two days, is cited as the risk of relying on human performers. Commercial growth is accelerating. Shizuku, an AI streamer launched on YouTube in 2023, raised $15 million in a round led by a16z. South Korea's AI boy band muuo:23 debuted this month, and Certain Call's YouTube subscribers rose from 100,000 to 2 million in six months.
