Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a scientific field and four years of research experience, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Wet-lab experience in microbiology and molecular biology techniques, including DNA and RNA extraction, library preparation and sequencing, and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction.
  • The ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • The position requires in-person work at an Emory University location; remote work is not an option.
Responsibilities
  • Independently perform highly technical and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
  • Devise specialized research procedures using advanced research techniques and equipment.
  • Provide input to protocol development.
  • Serve as a technical resource for other research personnel.
  • Analyze and interpret study results.
  • Investigate and recommend alternative approaches to improve result quality.
  • Train research staff in specialized procedures and theoretical concepts for unique tests.
  • Recommend equipment and supplies needed for specialized procedures.
  • Provide input into departmental goals and objectives.
  • Assist with grant and other funding application preparation.
  • Review literature for related research developments and techniques.
  • Prepare written materials, charts, and graphs on specialized techniques and research results for publication or presentation.
  • Oversee quality assurance of research performed by others.
  • Monitor the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Perform wet-lab experiments on bacterial and viral transmission in Caenorhabditis elegans, including data collection and basic analysis.
  • Develop protocols and troubleshoot novel protocols.
  • Work closely with current laboratory personnel.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience with Caenorhabditis elegans and/or low-template samples.
  • Experience handling and processing sequencing data.
  • Experience with flow cytometry and sequence analysis.
  • Prior experience training junior personnel.
