Requirements
  • Graduate of a Medical Imaging Program.
  • Hold Radiography certification with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or Nuclear Medicine Technologist certification through the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board within six months of hire.
  • Possess a current or temporary radiography license as required by the state board where services will be provided; for West Virginia, a Radiography license or Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic CT license through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board is required.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete state criminal background checks and federal checks, if applicable, as required for regulated areas.
  • Meet the applicable facility and clinical ladder requirements for the assigned level, including required experience, continuing education, leadership or supervisory competencies, and skill-set competencies.
  • Work weekend 12-hour shifts, rotate between the stated weekend schedules every other weekend, and participate in on-call and holiday rotations.
  • Be able to frequently walk, stand, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, and feel throughout the work shift.
  • Be able to lift, move, and position patients of all weights with varying assistance, including exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Have hearing and visual acuity within the normal range.
  • Work in environments involving exposure to body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, sharps, explosive gases, cleaning agents, disinfectants, and ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
  • Understand patient growth and development, patient needs, and the scope of treatment.
  • Understand each patient's biophysical, biopsychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, spiritual, cultural, ethical, and discharge-planning needs.
  • Understand total patient care for patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment, with emphasis on controlling pain and other symptoms.
Responsibilities
  • Perform diagnostic computed tomography procedures within the CT Department using designated equipment.
  • Rotate through diagnostic radiology as assigned.
  • Apply radiation protection and general safety practices at all times.
  • Prepare examination rooms, equipment, and materials, including sterile technique.
  • Clean and disinfect rooms and equipment after each patient examination according to current infection-control policies.
  • Perform examinations according to physician orders and explain procedures to patients.
  • Document protocol variations caused by a patient's condition or other unknown causes, and relay patient history and clinical data to the radiologist.
  • Observe patients and equipment, report unusual occurrences or changes, and transport and assist patients as needed.
  • Document the patient's status related to radiology and CT procedures in the patient chart.
  • Document variances, repeat examinations, and other occurrences to support quality improvement.
  • Maintain stock supplies and perform general office duties.
  • Label films properly and follow prescribed techniques to ensure acceptable quality and consistency.
  • Comply with departmental and hospital-wide policies and procedures.
  • Participate in patient-safety training and patient-protection activities, including methods for reporting medical or healthcare errors and abuse.
  • Produce diagnostic-quality images using CT equipment and judge CT images for proper technique to demonstrate anatomy and pathology.
  • Perform critical procedures under stress during emergency procedures.
  • When applicable, perform diagnostic studies with mobile radiographic equipment in emergency or patient rooms as ordered by a physician.
  • When applicable, perform diagnostic studies in the surgical suite using a C-arm and other equipment.
  • Provide care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Perform intravenous insertion and blood draws when required.
  • Administer intravenous, oral, or rectal contrast for CT imaging procedures according to radiologist protocol, department manuals, and ordering-provider instructions.
  • Use the picture archiving and communication system to ensure examinations are completed and available for radiologist interpretation and referring-provider review.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by the department manager or lead technologist.
  • Complete annual education related to specialty accreditation requirements when applicable.
