Requirements
  • Current Surgical Technologist Certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, National Center for Competencies Testing, or American Allied Health Association.
  • One of the following certifications is required: Certified Surgical First Assistant through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, Certified Surgical Assistant through the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants, or Surgical Assistant-Certified through the American Board of Surgical Assistants.
  • A graduate of a surgical technology accredited surgical assisting program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs is required.
  • Current Certified Surgical Technologist certification is required.
  • Current Certified Surgical First Assistant certification is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Two years of progressive clinical scrub experience in a Certified Surgical Technologist role is required.
  • The employee must be capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • The employee must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and push or pull heavily loaded carts up to 200 pounds.
  • The employee must possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity, manual dexterity, and technical ability.
  • The employee must be able to wear personal protective equipment and lead for extended periods of time.
  • The employee must be able to perform concentrated and complex mental activity in complex and highly technical situations.
  • The employee must be able to work successfully under stressful conditions and adapt to varying workloads and work assignments.
  • The employee must be able to make sound judgments based on scientific principles and collaborate appropriately with multidisciplinary team members.
  • The employee must be able to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures.
  • The employee must have thorough knowledge and scrub skills for all surgical specialties.
  • Mandatory call is required.
Responsibilities
  • Function as the surgeons' assistant, working directly under their supervision throughout procedures.
  • Assist the nurse, surgeon, anesthesiologist, and certified registered nurse anesthetist in caring for patients during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
  • Perform the technical skills required to prepare for surgical procedures.
  • Assist perioperative team members in caring for surgical patients.
  • Provide direct patient care and identify and meet patient needs under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Assist the surgeon in the perioperative care of patients and perform assigned duties under the surgeon's direction and supervision.
  • Assess patient needs related to specific surgical procedures and collect procedure-related supplies and equipment.
  • Deliver age-appropriate care addressing patients' cultural, spiritual, and psychosocial needs.
  • Promote a safe environment conducive to patient well-being, observe for potential complications, and report observations to the registered nurse.
  • Assist with scheduling operating-room cases, recording information, and revising and updating surgeon preference cards through the information-management system; use the electronic medical record when applicable.
  • Perform central reprocessing, including instrument decontamination, preparation of instruments for sterilization, operation of central-reprocessing equipment, and maintenance of equipment records according to policy and procedure.
  • Position patients appropriately while considering comfort, safety, pressure-point padding, and circulation.
  • Provide visualization of the operative site through placement and securement of retractors; packing with sponges; digital manipulation of tissue; suctioning, irrigating, and sponging; manipulation of suture materials; and proper body mechanics.
  • Use appropriate techniques for permanent and temporary hemostasis.
  • Use appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes.
  • Select and apply appropriate wound dressings.
  • Assist in securing drainage systems to tissues.
  • Complete annual education related to specialty accreditation requirements through computer-based learning, training, in-services, or competency validation.
