Requirements
  • A university/college diploma in Social Service, or a combination of education and related life experience; alternative combinations may be considered.
  • Competence with word-processing equipment such as Windows and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources.
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with socially disadvantaged people who may harbor resentment and anger.
  • Ability to establish and implement goals and plans for self and clients.
  • Ability to work independently and under supervision.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to successfully undergo applicable screening and background checks satisfactory to The Salvation Army, including its Abuse Registry, and provide an original background check with vulnerable-sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding of and support for The Salvation Army’s mission and purpose in Canada as they relate to the position.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a caseload.
  • Complete an intake and assessment for each resident.
  • Provide problem-solving and referral counseling to Booth Centre Shelter residents.
  • Develop a network and make referrals to community services and resources, including other Salvation Army departments.
  • Design and implement, in consultation with the supervisor, an interview schedule to evaluate quality-of-life improvement among successful program participants.
  • Assist front desk personnel as necessary, including responding to client issues and crises.
  • Respond to client issues in the dining hall and kitchen during meal services.
  • Record shift activities and incidents factually and concisely in the communication log book and incident reports.
  • Contact emergency service personnel, including ambulance or police, when necessary.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding clients, staff, and Centre records.
  • Work closely with the supervisor and carry out assigned tasks.
  • Participate fully in the Harm Reduction Program, including providing safer supply, client-centered support, and education.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of The Salvation Army Booth Centre Policy and Procedures Manual.
  • Meet with the Program Manager for scheduled supervision.
  • Maintain self-motivation, punctuality, and personal hygiene appropriate to the position.
  • Sign the agency and clients’ confidentiality form.
  • Attend authorized staff meetings, training workshops, and conferences.
  • Work within The Salvation Army’s mandate and mission.
  • Represent The Salvation Army Booth Centre professionally.
  • Perform other duties as required.
