About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree and 7+ years of experience in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Robotics, or a similar technical field, or a master's/PhD and 5+ years of experience.
  • A strong foundation in probability and statistics, data science, and scientific rigor applied to complex, multi-agent systems.
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and production data analysis, including visualization and statistics.
  • Experience defining performance targets and acceptance criteria for safety, comfort, and assertiveness, and producing analysis and evidence to justify them.
  • Ability to tackle technical challenges, analyze cross-disciplinary problems, and propose innovative, maintainable solutions.
  • Ability to lead initiatives, drive alignment, and ensure stakeholder engagement throughout the development process.
  • Working expertise in hazard and safety analysis methods such as STPA, HAZOP, FMEA, and hazard analysis and risk assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the central authority on evaluation for the Behaviors teams, bridging model development and system-level autonomous behavior.
  • Drive the evaluation strategy for prediction and planning models, including open-loop and simulation-based assessments.
  • Design and implement advanced metrics to measure model impact on overall system behavior, using machine-learning approaches for robust, end-to-end model evaluation.
  • Incorporate counterfactual reasoning and reaction-time analysis into evaluation frameworks to better understand system behavior.
  • Develop the data-mining strategy and assess training and evaluation dataset coverage across Prediction and Planning.
  • Build tooling and pipelines, identify process gaps, and collaborate with machine-learning engineers and roboticists to solve open-ended problems.
  • Partner with Safety, Infrastructure, Operations, Legal, and other Systems teams to drive design improvements, ensure features have a net positive effect on system safety, comfort, and assertiveness, and meet launch criteria.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience using statistical and machine-learning methods to quantify performance, detect regressions, and reveal patterns of system behavior at scale.
  • Deep experience with Prediction and/or Planning for autonomous robotics, including evaluating machine-learning-based systems in production environments.
  • Experience with public autonomous-vehicle datasets and benchmarks, such as Waymo Open Dataset and nuScenes, and deep understanding of standard industry metrics for trajectory forecasting and motion planning.
  • Prior experience using or building data pipelines at scale.
  • Familiarity with SOTIF, ISO 26262, UL 4600, AVSC behavior competencies, and other industry standards.

About the Company

Motional

All-electric driverless robotaxi service provider

Motional builds fully driverless, all-electric robotaxis for urban transportation. Its vehicles operate within ride-hailing and delivery networks by partnering with these services to provide autonomous mobility options. The cars use advanced sensors and software to navigate city streets safely, while a real-time Command Center monitors every robotaxi, allowing human agents to supervise operations, offer remote assistance, and ensure passenger safety. Motional differentiates itself through continuous real-time oversight, a scalable B2B model, and a focus on integrating autonomous vehicles into existing mobility networks rather than selling to individual consumers. The company aims to make driverless transportation safe, reliable, and accessible at scale, reducing costs and increasing efficiency for partners and riders alike.
