Requirements
  • A Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credential is required.
  • Knowledge of Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRG) is required.
  • Two to three years of acute-care hospital coding experience is required.
Responsibilities
  • Code and sequence all diagnoses and procedures documented in medical records according to official coding guidelines, coding principles, and reimbursement standards.
  • Use Computer Assisted Coding software according to assigned workflows.
  • Abstract required data and enter it into the Computer Assisted Coding system.
  • Work with Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists to obtain clear, concise, and specific physician documentation when clarification is needed.
  • Issue accurate coding queries following American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)-compliant coding query guidelines and assist medical staff with documentation clarification.
  • Meet and sustain inpatient coding production and quality standards after training.
  • Assist with special projects and reports as requested.
  • Promote a clean and safe environment of care using SAFE error-prevention habits.
  • Maintain patient, coworker, and hospital privacy and confidentiality by following the Standards of Conduct.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of APR-DRG is a plus.
  • Experience with 3M Encoder, Cerner, Meditech, or Optum systems is preferred.
