LG begins mass production of 5G telematics solution for European automaker

LG Electronics has begun mass production of its 5G R16-based smart telematics solution and started deliveries to a premium European automaker. This marks the solution's first deployment in a production vehicle in Europe. The system integrates a communications module and up to 12 antennas into a single unit, improving connectivity performance whilst reducing complexity, weight and cost. Traditional systems use separate components, but increasing connectivity demands have created space and wiring challenges, particularly for electric vehicles where weight affects range. Built on LG's proprietary Automotive Telematics Platform, developed over more than a decade, the solution enhances software reuse and development efficiency. LG aims to establish it as core communications infrastructure for software-defined vehicles, supporting over-the-air updates, vehicle-to-everything communication and autonomous-driving data transmission.

LG opens $310M smart factory in Brazil with 600,000-unit refrigerator capacity

LG Electronics has opened a new home appliance factory in Paraná, Brazil, representing an investment of approximately $310 million. The facility spans 770,000 square metres and has an annual production capacity of around 600,000 refrigerators. This is LG's second production base in Brazil, joining the Manaus plant which opened nearly three decades ago. The new factory incorporates smart manufacturing solutions, including AI-based inspection systems and industrial robots, to enhance productivity and quality. Refrigerators produced at the facility are designed specifically for Brazilian consumers, featuring bi-voltage compatibility for the country's 127V and 220V electrical systems. They also include LED-based internal sanitisation suited to Brazil's hot, humid climate. The factory will initially serve Brazil's domestic market and is expected to become a strategic export hub for Latin America longer-term.

LG exits smartphone business after $4.5B losses despite 10M G3 sales

LG exited the smartphone business in July 2021 after nearly six years of losses totalling around $4.5 billion. The South Korean company's market share had dropped to just 2% globally by 2020, making it the ninth-largest smartphone maker despite once holding 10% of the North American market. In Q4 2020, LG shipped only 7.6 million smartphones compared to Apple's 81.9 million and Samsung's 62.5 million. The company faced intense competition from Apple and Samsung in premium segments whilst Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo undercut it in entry-level markets. LG's mobile division contributed merely 7% of total revenue, prompting the company to redirect resources towards electric vehicle components, smart home technology, and artificial intelligence.

LG's 600kW cooling unit earns Nvidia AI Factory validation

LG Electronics has secured NVIDIA certification for its 600kW Coolant Distribution Unit, validating its thermal management technology for AI data centers. The South Korean company successfully met over 100 technical evaluation criteria, becoming one of few firms globally to pass NVIDIA's verification process for AI Factory infrastructure. The certified CDU uses Direct-to-Chip liquid cooling to manage high-heat AI GPUs, achieving temperature control precision of ±0.25 degrees Celsius. It integrates with LG's existing air-cooling systems and includes real-time monitoring and leak detection capabilities. LG offers a comprehensive Chip-to-Chiller portfolio spanning chillers, CDUs, and cold plates. The company plans to secure NVIDIA certifications for its larger capacity models, including 1MW, 2.5MW, and 4MW units. LG recently secured major data center cooling projects in North America and Indonesia's SM+ Data Center facility.
