Requirements
  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
  • Current CPR certification is required, or it must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention certification, or an approved equivalent, is required within 60 days of hire.
  • High school-level reading and writing skills and legible handwriting are required.
  • The ability to maintain professional boundaries is required.
  • The ability to maintain patient confidentiality is required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care to patients with emotional or psychiatric disorders.
  • Support the therapeutic milieu and ensure patient safety and well-being.
  • Carry out general nursing assistance for adolescent, adult, and older adult patients as assigned.
  • Complete environmental safety rounds each shift and perform ongoing safety assessments.
  • Secure contraband found within the milieu.
  • Document and record safety observations in patients' medical records as ordered or directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • Participate in treatment planning by identifying patients' problems, needs, and strengths; suggesting treatment-plan modifications based on behavioral observations; and providing input into discharge planning.
  • Implement patients' treatment plans by monitoring progress, communicating behavioral information to the treatment team, maintaining communication with patients, family members, and referral sources, co-facilitating groups, encouraging therapeutic activities, supervising patients, and providing input during shift reports.
  • Observe patient and staff interactions in hallways as Hall Monitor and report suspicious activity or potential boundary violations to the appropriate unit nurse and staff.
  • Accompany and transport patients as assigned.
  • Orient new patients to the unit, program, and milieu.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living when consistent with their treatment plan, needs, age, and developmental level.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and therapeutic physical environment.
  • Participate in maintaining the therapeutic milieu and enforce the level system or other behavior-management methods.
  • Maintain patient, program, department, and related documentation.
  • Perform clerical and administrative assignments supporting patient care and department operations.
  • Complete required orientation and competency assessments.
  • Participate in activities that enhance professional growth and development.
  • Uphold organizational ethics and customer-service standards and perform related duties as requested.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with medical and psychological terminology and human behavior principles is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of human growth and development is helpful.
  • Experience with therapeutic limit-setting, or an understanding of level systems and other behavior-management modalities, is helpful.
  • Skills in teaching or assisting with activities of daily living are helpful.
