Websites shut down globally after AI finds cybersecurity flaw affecting 70% of the internet. Lisa Eadicicco, Hanna Ziady, CNN Thu, October 22, 2026 at 11:26 AM PDT Governments and companies around the world are racing to fix vulnerabilities revealed by artificial intelligence that could affect 70% of the world's websites. Some websites and services briefly went dark after the set of vulnerabilities were announced Wednesday. The US National Security Agency and Europe's cybersecurity agency advised companies to take immediate action to address two critical flaws in PHP, a programming language that powers 70% of the world's websites. The flaws in PHP were uncovered and addressed by teams at OpenAI, Google-owned cybersecurity company Wiz, and another cybersecurity company, Calif. The underlying flaws had existed for a decade, but exploiting them involved a complex set of steps "at the edge of what human researchers could practically achieve," according to Wiz. Researchers then deployed AI to adapt techniques for taking advantage of those vulnerabilities - known as as "exploits" in cybersecurity - and analyze the results. The bugs, collectively called PHP2Shell, could allow attackers to break into websites and read memory that could contain sensitive information, like passwords. The PHP Foundation, the organization behind the coding language, has released a patch for the bugs, which have been hidden in their software for years, and is urging website operators to update their systems immediately. The CEO of Cloudflare said on X that his company's network has observed millions of attempts to exploit the vulnerabilities in the past couple of days. "With PHP behind such a vast share of the web, the exposure could reach almost everywhere people spend money online," said Nigel Green, the CEO of deVere Group, a financial advisory firm. "Booking platforms, marketplaces, subscription services, ticketing sites, delivery apps and utility portals could all be holding card details on systems built with the same kind of code," he added. 'AI inflection point' The vulnerabilities involve an issue with how the PHP language works with a computer's memory. When a website request unexpectedly ends, PHP could leave data behind in the memory that can be accessed and potentially corrupted or exposed later. The flaws could allow attackers to remotely execute code, disrupt services and expose customer data, according to web infrastructure provider Cloudflare, which has been working with the PHP Foundation, Calif, OpenAI and Wiz to address the issue. "Think of a hotel room where you check out, but your key still works," Patrick Fussell, global head of adversary simulation at IBM, told CNN. "And so you can just go back into that hotel room later, and now somebody else's stuff is there." The bugs were discovered in late August but were disclosed to the public only on Wednesday, after PHP had come up with a fix. AI played a crucial role in identifying and fixing vulnerabilities "that had remained hidden in the PHP codebase for more than a decade," according to Wiz. The company called PHP the "backbone of the web" and said the episode marks an AI inflection point. "What AI changed was the ability to understand the weaknesses," Wiz researchers wrote in a blog post Wednesday, and then quickly exploit those weaknesses into a way to attack. "With frontier AI models and the right tools, a single researcher completed in a week what previously would have taken a world-class team months of work," they added. Researchers at Wiz used Google's Gemini 4 Argon, Wiz Atlas and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol during the research process. World leaders weigh in. Global leaders urged organizations to take action. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten said that his cabinet was "closely monitoring the situation surrounding the vulnerabilities in PHP." Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said companies should consider suspending services if necessary in order to reduce their exposure. "Please check if your publicly available websites use PHP, and prepare to apply the fix patch that will be released tonight... as soon as possible," she posted on X Wednesday. Japanese airline ANA, railway operator JR West and the country's largest bank, MUFG, were among companies that reported some webpages and services temporarily suspended. In Europe, government websites in France, Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands, including the Dutch cyber security agency, were temporarily taken offline while security fixes were implemented. The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit that operates Wikipedia, told CNN Thursday that it was "in the process of addressing security vulnerabilities in PHP," and that a number of its systems had been taken down as a "precautionary measure." Nearly three dozen UK government services are unavailable and four are "partially unavailable" while security upgrades take place, UK government minister Elizabeth Lloyd told the House of Lords Thursday. The Journal, Ireland's second most-popular news outlet, was temporarily offline Thursday morning while it bolstered its "defences," it said in a notice. A shift in cybersecurity. Wiz researchers say the issue is on par with the Heartbleed bug from 2014, which impacted an encryption technology estimated to be used by some two-thirds of the Web. Heartbleed allowed cybercriminals to access data that should have been protected. Like Heartbleed, the researchers at Wiz say PHP2Shell could similarly serve as a turning point in cybersecurity. While the vulnerabilities existed for years, AI made it practical to deploy them. "The speed with which vulnerabilities are being discovered is well beyond what it ever was before," said Fussell. Even though a patch has been released, it's likely that not all companies and organizations will update their systems at the same time, according to Gang Wang, associate professor of computer science at the University of Illinois. That could give bad actors a window to exploit it now that the vulnerability has been made public - and they can now do so faster using AI. But taking advantage of the vulnerability is no easy task, even with the help of AI, according to Fussell. "This is being touted as like, 'Hey, you can push a button and basically take over a server type of thing,'" he said. "...To actually pull this off requires a couple of conditions that are actually fairly complex and not always going to work out in favor of somebody who's trying to go and exploit this bug." - CNN's John Liu, Anna Cooban, Amy Croffey and James Frater contributed reporting.

Reco joins the Wiz Integration Network (WIN). Technology Collaboration Helps Customers Reduce Cloud Risk and Extend Identity and Access Security to the Wiz Tenant Itself ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla., Oct. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Reco, the leader in Agent Security, today announced it has joined the Wiz Integration Network (WIN), an open security ecosystem redefining cloud and AI security collaboration. Through its integration with Wiz, now part of Google Cloud, Reco brings the power of the Reco Graph to the WIN ecosystem, giving customers a comprehensive, actionable view of risk. This partnership delivers: * Continuous visibility into every Wiz user, service account, and authentication policy, correlated against real activity. * Ongoing checks on the authentication surface that leads to console takeover: SAML configuration, MFA enforcement, and break-glass account usage. * Wiz identity metadata mapped to real people, departments, and risk profiles, so cloud alerts carry full organizational context. The combined value of these two offerings gives security teams one place to see risk, no matter where they are in their cloud and AI journey. By sharing prioritized findings with context, customers gain a unified, actionable view of risk. Nearly 30 Reco customers already run the Wiz integration in production today. "Wiz holds the blueprint of an organization's entire cloud. That's exactly why the Wiz tenant deserves the same scrutiny as everything it protects," said Zoe Hillenmeyer, chief operating officer at Reco. "Joining WIN puts that scrutiny directly into the ecosystem customers already trust, so the identity and access layer behind Wiz gets the same attention as the infrastructure it secures." "Securing your environment requires clear visibility into who has access and how that access is actually used," said Oron Noah, VP of Product, Extensibility and Partnerships at Wiz. "Our integration with Reco gives joint customers actionable context across their infrastructure, helping teams prioritize real risk without adding operational complexity." Foresite launches managed services for Wiz, reaching Premier tier in the Wiz Partner Alliance Services Program. Sep 28, 2026, 09:15 ET Foresite builds on its experience deploying and operating the Google Cloud security stack by extending that same approach to Wiz, now part of Google Cloud - helping customers turn cloud risk findings into coordinated action. OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Sept. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Foresite Cybersecurity, the 2026 Google Cloud Security Partner of the Year for North America, today announced the expansion of its cloud security services to include Wiz, alongside its achievement of Premier tier in the Wiz Partner Alliance Services Program and participation in the Wiz Partner Alliance Managed Service Provider Program. The expansion builds on Foresite's experience deploying and operating the Google Cloud security stack, helping enterprises connect cloud risk management with security operations. By combining the power of Wiz's cloud and AI security platform with Google Cloud's security portfolio, Foresite helps enterprises translate those capabilities into a cohesive security program. By connecting cloud security and SOC teams through shared context, coordinated workflows and clear ownership, Foresite helps customers move from identifying cloud risk to investigating threats and taking action. Foresite's services span assessment, implementation and ongoing operations across the Wiz AI Application Protection Platform (AI-APP). Enterprises can engage Foresite to strengthen existing deployments, introduce new capabilities or manage day-to-day platform operations, with services tailored to their environment and priorities. Organizations looking to deploy or operate Wiz can learn more and request a Wiz Health Check at foresite.com/wiz. A central part of this approach is the integration of Wiz with Google Security Operations, connecting cloud risk findings and runtime detections with SOC investigation and response. Foresite supports these operations around the clock through 24/7 managed detection and response operated from its Cyber Fusion Centers, combining automated investigation with practitioner oversight of high-impact response actions. Foresite's Premier designation and participation in Wiz's Managed Service Program reflects its investment in delivery expertise across the Wiz platform and its completed customer engagements. "The opportunity is to connect what teams know about cloud risk with how they investigate and respond to threats," said Jeremy Hehl, Chief Evangelist at Foresite. "We're building on our experience across Google Cloud security to help customers bring Wiz into that operating model, with the expertise to deploy it and the ongoing support to make it effective." Key benefits include: * Complete visibility and onboarding: Foresite fully deploys and manages Wiz to deliver agentless visibility across your cloud and AI environments. * Expert risk prioritization: Using the Wiz Security Graph, Foresite analysts evaluate misconfigurations, vulnerabilities, identities, and data exposures to turn security context into clear, actionable priorities. * Accelerated remediation: By pairing direct remediation support with the Wiz platform, Foresite resolves critical risks at the root cause and continuously enforces compliance, without slowing innovation. "As AI models change how software is built and secured, security teams must now adapt their operating models to defend at machine speed. Wiz provides the context-driven cloud and AI security to protect everything organizations build and run," said Andy Ritchie, Vice President, Global Channels and Alliances, Wiz. "Our partners are critical to delivering this value, and the Premier tier represents the absolute highest level of technical competency, training, and accreditation in the Wiz platform. Foresite has proven their deep commitment to this standard, rapidly qualifying their engineers to ensure our joint customers have a trusted partner to defend their operations day to day." Brian Carlton, Global Director, Partner Solutions Architecture, Wiz, said "Context is what makes cloud risk actionable, and the Wiz Security Graph is where that context lives. What sets Foresite apart is that the team deploying Wiz is also the team running the security operations. For most organizations those are two separate programs, and the gap between them is where cloud security often stalls." Proof in production OpenVPN, whose connectivity products protect networks for businesses worldwide, has standardized its cloud security on Wiz, deployed and operated by Foresite. Running production workloads across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, OpenVPN needed protection built for a multi-cloud estate: one view of risk across every environment, code security that catches problems before they ship, and runtime detection tied to real response. Foresite engineered Wiz's Cloud, Code and Defend as a phased rollout, with coverage validated at each layer before the next began, and now operates the platform as a managed service alongside the security operations it has run for OpenVPN on Google SecOps since 2025. "Our production estate spans more than one cloud, and the risk that matters is rarely confined to one of them. We chose Wiz because the Security Graph gives us one picture of that risk, and we chose Foresite to engineer and run it because they already operated our security operations on Google Security Operations and understood how findings needed to reach the people who act on them," said Brian Litzinger, Chief Information Security Officer at OpenVPN. "The phased rollout meant every layer was proven before the next one went live. What changed with continuous operations is that cloud risk stopped being a report we review and became part of how our SOC investigates and responds in Google Security Operations every day. For a lean security team, that is the difference between knowing about exposure and closing it." About Foresite Cybersecurity Foresite Cybersecurity is a Google Cloud Premier Partner with Security and MSSP specializations, the 2026 Google Cloud Security Partner of the Year for North America, and a Premier-tier Partner in the Wiz Partner Alliance Managed Service Provider Program, providing managed security operations, compliance automation, and threat intelligence services.
