About the company

AT&T sells mobile phone plans and home internet to households and businesses across the US, and runs a wireless business in Mexico. Its business rests on two networks: a nationwide 5G wireless network and a fiber internet network that is replacing its old copper phone lines. Companies and government agencies also buy private networks, security and connectivity services from its business unit. Most revenue comes from monthly service plans plus device installment payments, and the company pushes customers to combine phone and home internet. AT&T Inc. began in 1983 as Southwestern Bell, took the AT&T name after buying its former parent in 2005, and is based in Dallas, Texas.

What believers are saying

  • Fiber is AT&T's main growth bet: it targets over 40 million fiber locations by December 2026.
  • Fiber growth includes acquisitions: AT&T's February 2026 purchase of Lumen's consumer fiber unit added over 1 million customers.
  • AT&T is investing in offices: a $1.35 billion Plano campus, announced January 2026, will house nearly 6,000 staff.

What critics are saying

  • Debt stays high for years: AT&T expects about three years after its EchoStar purchase to restore its 2.5x debt target.
  • The workforce is shrinking: AT&T's headcount fell from about 141,000 to 133,000 in the year to December 2025.
  • FirstNet depends on Washington: a federal authority oversees AT&T's first-responder contract and needs renewal from Congress.

What makes AT&T unique

  • AT&T runs the national first-responder network: its FirstNet federal contract lasts until 2042.
  • AT&T bought more airwaves in July 2026: its $23 billion EchoStar deal added spectrum across about 400 markets.
  • AT&T sells phone and home internet together: 42.5% of its advanced internet homes also used AT&T wireless.

AT&T cuts dividend bill 46% to $8.18B as buybacks surge to $6.6B

AT&T cut its cash dividend payments 45.7% between 2021 and 2025, from $15.07 billion to $8.18 billion, while spending more on share buybacks. Repurchases rose to $6.575 billion in 2025 from $215 million in 2024. Dividends and buybacks together totalled about $14.755 billion in 2025, close to the 2021 dividend bill alone. The quarterly payout has stayed at $0.2775 per share since the 2022 cut. AT&T aims for about $10 billion of buybacks in 2026 and more than $24 billion from 2026 through 2028. It plans to hold the annual dividend at $1.11 per share through 2028. Leverage rose to 3.13x adjusted EBITDA after the $23 billion EchoStar spectrum purchase. AT&T expects to return to its 2.5x range during 2029.

Wireless pioneer says cell towers acting as radar could one day make mobile internet free

Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile could one day make mobile internet free, wireless pioneer Ray Dolan told Benzinga. He believes cellphone towers could earn money by detecting drones, tracking vehicles and monitoring their surroundings. Dolan, chief executive officer of privately held Cohere Technologies, said governments and businesses could pay for that data. The revenue could eventually exceed what operators earn from connectivity, letting them stop charging for access. "Connectivity itself can become the enabler whose cost is subsidized or given away," he said. Cohere is developing technology that lets towers work like radar. In July, AT&T and Ericsson showed that existing 5G infrastructure could detect and track drones. The task is large: T-Mobile alone reported $19.4 billion in third-quarter service revenue. Dolan gave no timetable, and said privacy concerns "must be addressed carefully.

RAISE US, Raimondo's AI workforce group, raises over $200M in new corporate backing

RAISE US, a group formed to help workers adapt to artificial intelligence (AI), has won new corporate backing. Its funding total has risen by more than $200 million since its June launch, though it is not disclosing specific donations. Former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and former Indiana governor Eric Holcomb launched the group with a goal of $1 billion in multiyear commitments. Raimondo said the money will help it work with states and employers on apprenticeships, early-career training, retraining mid-career workers, and strengthening the social safety net. Its RAISE US Policy Lab will test ideas for supporting and retraining workers, then turn the findings into recommendations for policymakers and the private sector. Raimondo said action in Washington isn't keeping pace with Americans' AI anxiety. The coalition includes businesses, organised labour, nonprofits, universities, and bipartisan governors.

AT&T, Pfizer and Zoetis offer yields up to 5.8% with shares under $100

Rising interest rates and bond yields have made dividend stocks less appealing, pushing many lower and their yields higher. Three that trade below $100 are AT&T, Pfizer, and Zoetis, according to The Motley Fool. AT&T trades around $21, down about 16% this year, with a price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 11 against 23 for the S&P 500. It yields 5.3% after revenue grew more than 5% in the September quarter. Pfizer trades near $30 and yields 5.8%. Its forward P/E is 10, though its shares are down more than 30% over five years. Zoetis, down 37% this year, trades below $80 with a P/E of 13 and a yield of about 2.6%. Its payout ratio is around 34% of earnings, and it has 12 potential blockbusters in its pipeline.

Collin County office space runs short as AT&T and Samsung relocate; 13M SF pipeline is years away

Space is getting scarce in Collin County, Texas. A company seeking 250,000 SF has roughly four Class A office buildings to choose from, KDC Senior Vice President Aarica Mims told Bisnow. Relocations by AT&T and Samsung Electronics America are lifting demand in Frisco, Plano, and McKinney. Talent, quality of life, and quick-moving local officials are the draws. Most new supply is years away. Karahan Cos. and KDC plan about 11M SF of custom office space at Fields in Frisco, and the Dallas Stars' $3B district in Plano could add up to 2M SF. KDC is seeking about $3.5B in financing for AT&T's 2.3M SF Plano campus. State filings point to a December 1 construction start. Tenants must choose between existing space and build-to-suit.
