Lululemon cuts seven fabric team roles after see-through legging complaints

Lululemon Athletica has reorganised its fabric development team and cut seven roles after a series of product quality problems, Bloomberg reported. The Vancouver-based retailer made the changes in August to move some raw material work closer to vendor partners in key international hubs. It is now hiring raw materials development staff in Taipei, Taiwan, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Earlier this year, Lululemon briefly suspended online sales of its Get Low collection after customers said the tights were see-through. About a month later, its heart-patterned leggings drew similar complaints. The changes came just before Heidi O'Neill took over as chief executive officer. Investors will watch whether the shift improves quality oversight and protects margins.

Lululemon faces securities fraud investigation after 17.4% stock drop

Law firm Bleichmar Fonti & Auld LLP (BFA) is investigating whether Lululemon athletica inc. committed securities fraud by misleading investors about its growth and business health. The firm points to three stock drops this year. Shares fell 13.3% on April 23 after Lululemon named Heidi O'Neill chief executive officer, effective September 8. They fell 8.6% on June 5 after the company reported gross margins down 4% year-over-year. The largest drop came on September 4, when shares fell 17.4%, from $121.77 to $100.61. Lululemon had reported a 4.3% revenue decline and cut its full-year guidance. BFA says it represents investors on a contingency fee basis.

Lululemon, Under Armour and Dollar General cut product lines by up to 25% to protect margins

Lululemon, Under Armour, Dollar General, and BJ's Wholesale Club are cutting the number of products they sell to protect profits, CNBC reported. High gas and food costs have curbed consumer spending, leaving retailers hunting for ways to defend margins. Dollar General said in March it had dropped 1,500 stock keeping units (SKUs). Under Armour has cut its SKU count by 25% and plans another 25%, while BJ's targets a roughly 20% reduction. Lululemon pulled back North American SKUs by 15%. Under Armour chief executive officer Kevin Plank said the company will "sell so much more of so many less products at a much higher full retail price." Lululemon's second-quarter revenue fell 4% to $2.4 billion, and its stock is down about 65% in two years. BJ's acknowledged an earlier SKU cut backfired because it did not replace unnecessary choice.

Lululemon's new CEO bets on product to win back customers after a year of decline

Lululemon is trying to win back customers after more than a year of slowing growth. New chief executive officer Heidi O'Neill, who joined from Nike in May, says the fix starts with product that is "innovative and distinctive." Part of the trouble was self-inflicted. A Jefferies analyst said markdowns had reached "alarming" levels, risking the brand's premium image, while founder Chip Wilson accused leadership of putting short-term margins ahead of innovation. Competition and tariffs add pressure. Brands such as Vuori and Alo Yoga are gaining attention, and a NielsenIQ director said US demand is softening. Analysts say new products alone may not be enough. Lululemon had planned to lift new styles from 23% of its mix to 35%.
