Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A state criminal background check and, if applicable, a federal criminal background check are required for regulated areas.
  • Accurately use applicable computer software and equipment for access processing and follow downtime procedures.
  • Know the procedures for reporting or documenting unsafe or hazardous conditions, incidents, and defective equipment in compliance with hospital policy.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail, organization, and the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Be able to memorize and reference information from written sources or appropriate personnel.
  • Understand medical insurance requirements for payment and have basic knowledge of covered services.
  • Have written and verbal communication skills and the ability to understand written and verbal communications.
  • Have basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Meet the physical requirements of frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; normal visual acuity; manual dexterity to operate keyboards, fax machines, telephones, and other business equipment; extended sitting and/or standing; and reading and comprehension ability.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain demographic, billing, and insurance information from the patient, family, or legal guardian; enter it into registration and billing systems for service and claim processing; and scan insurance cards and photo identification.
  • Provide patients with information about insurance, bill payment, and hospital procedures.
  • Complete managed-care tasks related to obtaining pre-certification and authorizations when needed.
  • Prepare standard consent forms, notices of privacy practices, and other registration paperwork; present them for signature; and obtain electronic signatures for consent to treat and patient financial obligations.
  • Collect deposits, co-payments, deductibles, and patient-liability payments when applicable; provide receipts; and document payments in registration and billing systems.
  • Prepare patient-identification armbands.
  • Balance daily receipts and the cash drawer for patient payments as needed, and follow up on accounts flagged by the system.
  • Initiate screenings when needed, obtain relevant coverage information, and complete appropriate paperwork.
  • Perform medical-necessity checks and complete an Advanced Beneficiary Notice as needed.
  • Schedule, reschedule, or cancel patients according to hospital workflows.
  • Check that orders are complete and validate orders against scheduled services.
