Requirements
  • Requires PGY 1 plus 1–3 years, PGY 2, or 3–5 years of experience in a clinical specialty area.
  • Requires an active Massachusetts pharmacist license.
  • Must maintain certification and credentials in accordance with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy.
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population regularly served and seek assistance when other population groups need care.
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds; most time is spent standing and/or walking.
  • Must be vaccinated against influenza as a condition of employment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide pharmaceutical care to patients at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Needham.
  • Initiate and ensure the quality of pharmacy drug distribution services in all patient care areas.
  • Assume direct responsibility for medication distribution and IV admixtures, and ensure the safety and efficacy of prescribed drug therapy in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Practice in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations, including those governing the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, Department of Public Health, Food and Drug Administration, and Drug Enforcement Administration; adhere to institutional policies and procedures.
  • Review and verify medication orders using patient-specific parameters, including diagnosis, weight or body surface area, age, allergies, organ function, laboratory values, medication duplication, and drug interactions; clarify inappropriate, incomplete, or unclear orders with prescribers in a timely manner.
  • Document and communicate pertinent information and discussions with the healthcare team and pharmacy staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Provide drug information to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Supervise students, technicians, and residents within the pharmacist area of practice, including checking compounded sterile products and prepared unit-dose medications as needed.
  • Submit medication-related events and near misses to promote patient safety.
  • Complete daily pharmacy surveillance monitoring, follow-up, and documentation, as well as other daily patient care initiatives.
  • Participate in onboarding and training new hires.
  • Precept and evaluate pharmacy students and/or residents through core clinical rotations or learning experiences and student- or resident-led quality-improvement projects.
  • Participate in departmental continuous performance improvement activities, including organizing and considering suggestions to improve day-to-day operations.
  • Lead technicians in maintaining optimal drug inventory, ensuring medication availability while maximizing inventory turns.
  • Finalize departmental initiatives, including formulary stewardship, drug utilization review, presenting new medication requests at the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, and developing departmental tools and resources.
  • Coordinate and finalize assigned special projects on time.
  • Lead a core area of practice, potentially including IV room performance and operations or a clinical area, through interdisciplinary education, ongoing specialty training, and serving as a resource for pharmacy staff.
  • Update clinical guidelines and standard operating procedures and present hospital-wide educational initiatives.
  • Serve on departmental committees to improve processes and quality outcomes.
  • Support IRB-approved research, medication-use evaluations, and cost-savings initiatives.
  • Support drug-shortage management.
  • Work collaboratively with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy personnel, and uphold a culture of respect and teamwork across the Pharmacy Department.

Beth Israel Lahey Health rolls out Heidi's AI scribing to all physicians after 90% report better patient presence

Beth Israel Lahey Health is rolling out Heidi's ambient AI scribing tool to all its physicians following a successful trial across its facilities. The health system, which serves over 6,000 providers across 14 hospitals and 175 primary care practices, prioritises addressing physician burnout, with nearly half of US physicians reporting burnout. During a six-month trial offering Heidi to 1,000 providers, the majority adopted the technology. Survey results showed 89% were satisfied with note quality, 90% felt more present with patients, 74% reduced after-hours work time, and 82% experienced reduced cognitive load during visits. The implementation demonstrates how ambient AI can deliver immediate relief to physicians whilst benefiting patients and the healthcare system. Heidi supports over 2 million consultations weekly globally and has raised $96.6 million from investors including Point72 Private Investments and Blackbird.
