Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited academic institution in Laser and Optical Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear or Radiation Science, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Biology, or another related field is required.
  • Two years of experience in environmental health and safety compliance are required.
  • The candidate must be eligible to be certified as a Certified Health Physicist, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Laser Safety Officer, or Certified Industrial Hygienist.
  • The candidate must pass university and Federal Bureau of Investigation security background checks.
  • A Class C operator's driver's license is required, along with a current three-year driving record; non-Texas residents must obtain a Texas driver's license within 30 days of becoming Texas residents.
  • The candidate must be able to work a 40-hour Monday-Friday schedule from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • The candidate must provide a resume or curriculum vitae, three work references including at least one supervisor reference, and a letter of interest.
Responsibilities
  • Participate in the laser laboratory compliance inspection program and perform routine onsite laser laboratory safety assessments.
  • Ensure laser use meets state regulatory requirements and other applicable standards, recommend appropriate control measures, and ensure personnel complete laser safety training.
  • Perform laser beam hazard evaluations and produce reports and documentation with recommendations for protecting laser users, facilities, and the public.
  • Collect and confirm laser emission parameters for new and current lasers.
  • Assist with updating, maintaining, and upgrading Laser Safety Program database files, and produce reports and maintain records.
  • Provide oversight of the Laser Pointer policy implementation; coordinate assessments with university faculty and staff and collect and record laser product information and emission parameters.
  • Provide general safety and compliance support to the Radiation and Laser Safety group, including maintaining laser measurement equipment calibration and repair and supporting radioactive materials, X-ray devices, radio-frequency emissions, sampling, surveys, and related activities.
  • Drive university vehicles and maintain an acceptable driver rating.
  • Participate in the on-call program and perform other job-related functions as assigned.
  • Comply with Environmental Health and Safety principles, federal, state, and local laws, university rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree from an accredited academic institution in Engineering, Applied or Basic Science, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field is preferred.
  • More than four years of full-time health physics or laser safety experience at an academic research institution is preferred.
  • Certification as a Certified Health Physicist, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Laser Safety Officer, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or comparable certification is preferred.
  • United States Department of Transportation, International Civil Aviation Organization, or International Air Transport Association Hazardous Material Shipper's Certification is preferred.
