About the job

Requirements
  • At least 7 years of experience in information security, security engineering, or related roles, with meaningful ownership across multiple areas of a security program.
  • Experience building or materially evolving a security program in a startup, growth-stage technology company, or similarly fast-moving environment.
  • Technical depth in modern cloud environments, including cloud identity and access management, networking, application and infrastructure security, data protection, secrets management, logging and detection, vulnerability management, and endpoint or identity security.
  • Experience working closely with software engineering and infrastructure teams, with enough technical fluency to evaluate architecture, investigate security issues, and implement or meaningfully contribute to technical controls.
  • Understanding of security operations and incident response, including telemetry, detection, investigation, escalation, and response capabilities.
  • Experience protecting sensitive data in regulated environments.
  • Experience with security and compliance frameworks such as SOC 2 and ISO 27001, including translating framework requirements into operational and technical controls.
  • Strong risk judgment to distinguish meaningful business risk from theoretical issues, prioritize accordingly, and explain recommendations.
  • Ability to move between strategy, architecture, tooling, policy, investigation, and implementation in a small security team.
  • Ability to discuss technical security issues with engineers, explain risk and investment decisions to executives, and represent the company with customers' security and compliance teams.
Responsibilities
  • Own the company's security strategy and risk program by assessing security posture across product, cloud infrastructure, corporate systems, endpoints, vendors, and operational processes; build on the existing SOC 2 Type 2 program, establish a risk-based roadmap, identify gaps, and advise leadership on investments toward ISO 27001.
  • Define and continuously improve technical security posture in partnership with engineering and infrastructure teams, including security across GCP environments and the software development lifecycle.
  • Protect PHI, customer data, credentials, and other sensitive information throughout its lifecycle by defining and improving relevant controls.
  • Build detection, incident response, and security operations capabilities to detect, investigate, contain, and learn from security events; improve security telemetry and SIEM capabilities, detection and alerting strategies, and incident response processes; run exercises and coordinate investigations.
  • Own corporate security across employee identity, endpoints, SaaS applications, and other corporate systems; work with Operations and IT on identity and access management, endpoint security, device management, employee lifecycle controls, and account management.
  • Build upon the existing security awareness and training program, including regular phishing simulations and social engineering exercises.
  • Work with the Chief Privacy Officer and leadership team to identify key security risks and establish a strategic plan that balances risk management with organizational priorities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Hands-on GCP experience; equivalent AWS or Azure experience is relevant.
  • Healthcare experience, particularly HIPAA and PHI handling; experience in other highly regulated industries may also be relevant.
  • Experience with SIEM and related security tooling.
  • Experience leading an organization through ISO 27001 certification.

About the company

Layer Health builds an enterprise AI platform for healthcare chart review. It uses a healthcare-focused large language model (LLM) to analyze longitudinal patient charts, enabling clinicians and life sciences teams to answer complex clinical questions, automate clinical registries, and generate quality measurements. The system works by processing patient charts through modules that support registry data submission, real-world evidence abstraction, and patient registries, with emphasis on accuracy, configurability, and security. It differentiates itself from competitors through healthcare-specific validation, enterprise-grade security/compliance, and a broad set of use cases tailored to both health systems and life sciences, enabling faster, more reliable data analysis with fewer administrative burdens. Its goal is to streamline chart review, improve data quality, and free clinicians to focus more on patient care by delivering actionable insights and reliable data faster.
