Requirements
  • At least 3 years of experience as an Oncology Data Specialist (ODS).
  • At least 1 year of experience in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • A current, valid Oncology Data Specialist (ODS-C) credential from the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) is required, with evidence of maintained certification provided annually.
  • Expert-level knowledge of Commission on Cancer (CoC) data standards, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging protocols, and Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) standards.
  • Familiarity with Department of Veterans Affairs-specific registry software and database systems.
  • Ability to adhere to federal security and privacy laws, including the Privacy Act and HIPAA, and VA sensitive information policies.
  • Adherence to the NCRA Code of Ethics.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise a team of 5–10 full-time and part-time Oncology Data Specialists.
  • Perform internal quality audits to ensure cancer registry data accuracy, completeness, and reliability, and correct data inconsistencies within five business days.
  • Assign case work to team members based on Veterans Integrated Service Network and Veterans Affairs Medical Center requirements.
  • Input weekly log totals and track team progress using Jira to ensure deliverables meet Performance Work Statement timelines.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for team Oncology Data Specialists and resolve technical or procedural issues related to VA systems, directives, and policies.
  • Assist in developing the Monthly Program Report by providing quality-control findings and workforce staffing updates.

  • Five or more years of experience as an Oncology Data Specialist.
  • Experience working within the Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare system.
  • Working knowledge of Jira for task management and project tracking.
