About the Job

Requirements

  • A Master's degree or higher in Packaging, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • At least 8 years of experience in semiconductor packaging, with a focus on photonic or advanced packaging, is required.
  • Hands-on experience with fiber attach processes, photonic alignment, and optical coupling techniques is required.
  • Familiarity with die attach, flip-chip, underfill, molding, and micro-optics integration is required.
  • Understanding of reliability standards and qualification methodologies for optical modules is required.
  • Experience bringing packaged products from development into production is required.
  • Strong written and spoken English communication skills are required.

Responsibilities

  • Define, design, and qualify optical packaging architectures for silicon-photonics-based modules, including fiber attach, photonic die placement, and thermal/mechanical integration.
  • Develop and implement scalable fiber-to-chip coupling strategies, including V-groove, passive alignment, and lens integration, for high-density optical I/O.
  • Drive heterogeneous integration of photonic and electronic components using 2.5D, 3D, and 3.5D packaging technologies, including TSV, Cu-Cu hybrid bonding, and advanced molded integration.
  • Perform thermal, mechanical, and optical multiphysics simulations to optimize package performance and reliability.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for yield and reliability issues using FMEA, DOE, and failure-analysis tools.
  • Collaborate with OSATs and internal manufacturing teams to ensure mass-production readiness and process transfer.
  • Support cost modeling and drive package cost-reduction initiatives aligned with GF's B2B supply chain strategy.
  • Present technical updates and roadmaps to internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Perform activities safely and responsibly and support Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security requirements and programs.
  • Travel up to 25% to other GlobalFoundries facilities or external partner sites as necessary.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with automated optical/electro-optical test setups and motion-control systems, such as Python-based systems.
  • Knowledge of co-packaged optics, pluggable modules, and silicon photonics ecosystems.
  • Expertise in chip-package interaction for 2D, 2.5D, 3D, and 3.5D silicon-photonics advanced packaging.
  • A strong background in thermal/mechanical modeling and optical simulation tools, such as Lumerical and COMSOL.
  • Familiarity with GF's Fotonix platform, including 300 mm monolithic silicon-photonics integration and advanced packaging flows.
  • Experience working with OSATs and managing external development partners.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence technical direction.

About the Company

GlobalFoundries

Semiconductor foundry delivering specialized chips

GlobalFoundries is a semiconductor foundry that manufactures chips for a broad range of customers, focusing on feature-rich, reliable technologies for cars, IoT, 5G, and other high-growth markets. It operates by fabricating silicon wafers for customer designs, offering mature, specialized processes rather than chasing the most advanced nodes. This makes it different from peers that prize the latest process nodes; GlobalFoundries emphasizes diversification across a global manufacturing footprint (U.S., Europe, Singapore) and stable supply for essential applications. Its goal is to be a leading supplier of high-volume, specialty manufacturing that enables reliable chips for everyday devices and growing tech markets.
