About the job

Requirements
  • 12+ years in technology, with deep, hands-on data architecture experience at Aetna Technology scale.
  • Expert-level data platform architecture across multivendor, multicloud environments, such as Snowflake, Google Cloud Platform/BigQuery, and Amazon Web Services; fluency across modeling, pipelines, and consumption layers.
  • Demonstrated ownership of enterprise data architectures and golden-path patterns for data products.
  • Strong command of data governance, lineage, quality, and regulated-data controls, such as protected health information or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of data mesh, domain ownership, and systems-of-record design.
  • Track record of driving technical outcomes through influence and design authority as an individual contributor.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Responsibilities
  • Own the Aetna Technology data reference architectures—including ingestion, storage, transformation, semantic, and consumption layers—across a multivendor, multicloud data estate.
  • Define the data mesh operating model, including domain-owned data products with clear contracts and platform capabilities that enable domain ownership without fragmentation.
  • Establish and protect the authoritative systems of record by determining which domain owns each dataset and how other domains consume it.
  • Design and maintain golden paths for pipelines and data products, including ingestion, modeling, and publishing patterns that prevent teams from having to solve previously addressed problems again.
  • Embed data governance, lineage, and quality as automated pipeline gates.
  • Define default controls for regulated and sensitive data, including protected health information, covering classification, access, masking, and retention across the portfolio.
  • Establish zero-trust data-access patterns, including identity, least privilege, and blast-radius reduction for authoritative datasets.
  • Provide the data architecture underpinning Aetna Technology AI capabilities, including feature readiness, retrieval, and data contracts for AI and agentic systems.
  • Establish the semantic and metrics layer that supports reliable scaling of analytics and dashboards for people-managers and business users across Aetna.
  • Partner with AI and analytics platform teams on the data infrastructure required to serve workloads securely and cost-effectively at scale.
  • Author data standards enforced as automated gates and golden-path defaults rather than review queues.
  • Contribute to architecture governance through reference architectures, technology radar input, and design reviews in partnership with Enterprise Architecture.
  • Evaluate emerging data platform and tooling options and make directional adoption recommendations.
  • Translate data architecture trade-offs into clear, decision-oriented narratives for senior technology leaders and peer architects.
  • Coach Solution Architects and senior engineers through design reviews and system-level reasoning without direct reporting relationships.
  • Act as a technical partner to strategic data platform vendors and internal platform teams.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in healthcare, health insurance, or similarly regulated industries.
  • Hands-on background with the data infrastructure behind AI and machine learning, including feature stores, retrieval, and data contracts for model and agent workloads.
  • Familiarity with FinOps and cost-aware data architecture, and the ability to tie design decisions to dollar impact.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and automated policy or guardrail enforcement.

CVS opens small 3,000 sq ft pharmacies to fill gaps left by 1,000 Walgreens and Rite Aid closures

CVS Health is opening small, pharmacy-only stores in communities left underserved after rivals closed locations. The chain has opened its newest 3,000-square-foot store in Roxbury, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. Walgreens and CVS have closed over 1,000 stores in recent years, and Rite Aid shut all 2,000 of its stores in 2023. Thinner margins strained profits at the chains. CVS plans to open 20 small-format stores this year. It already has sites in Birmingham, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, and Washington, D.C. Most offer immunisations as well as prescriptions. Smaller stores could cut inventory and rent costs. Walgreens has opened about 100 smaller stores for the same reason. IBISWorld puts the US pharmacy market at $739.4 billion in 2026.

MinuteClinic opens three Massachusetts clinics, including its first in Boston

CVS Health said MinuteClinic, its medical clinic inside select CVS Pharmacy stores, has opened three Massachusetts locations in Charlestown, Beverly, and Swampscott. The Charlestown clinic is the first MinuteClinic in Boston. Board-certified nurse practitioners staff each clinic. They offer vaccinations, health screenings, routine lab tests, physicals, and treatment for minor illnesses and injuries. Patients aged 18 months and older can walk in seven days a week, including evenings and weekends. Most major health insurance is accepted, and self-pay options are available. "By making care more accessible, we can help patients address health concerns earlier and avoid unnecessary visits to higher-cost settings such as the emergency room," said Tara Allain, executive area director at MinuteClinic.

CVS Health raises 2026 revenue forecast to $414B, but shares fall 11.5%

CVS Health raised its fiscal 2026 revenue forecast on August 5 to at least $414 billion, up from $405 billion in May. Yet the stock has fallen 11.5% since, against a 1.0% dip for the S&P 500. The company also lifted its adjusted earnings per share target to between $7.90 and $8.10, from $7.40 at the mid-point. It now expects cash flow from operations of at least $11.5 billion, up from $9.5 billion. Shares closed at $92.36 on October 16, just above the 50-day average of $91.73 and the 200-day average of $87.51. The new forecast implies second-half revenue about 0.5% below the same period last year. The next key test is the September quarter report, expected on November 4.

CVS Health opens first pharmacy-focused location in Boston area

CVS Health has opened its first pharmacy-focused location in the Boston area, situated at 32 Warren Street in Roxbury. The company plans to launch nearly 20 such locations across the US in 2026 to increase access to pharmacy care. The new format features full-service pharmacies averaging 3,000 square feet, offering prescription medications, immunisations, and over-the-counter products. Customers can order additional items with free home delivery. The Roxbury site includes a medication disposal bin and safe needle collection point. These smaller pharmacies complement CVS's existing formats, including traditional stores, store-in-store locations in Target and Schnucks, and sites with MinuteClinic facilities. According to CVS Health's 2025 Rx Report, 80% of patients prefer face-to-face pharmacy care, whilst 48% would switch pharmacies if limited to digital-only options.

CVS shares drop 15% as pharmacy giant warns of unquantified 340B business headwinds in 2027

CVS Health faces an unquantified headwind from its 340B drug discount programme heading into 2027, management warned during its fiscal Q2 2026 earnings call in August. The company's shares have fallen 15.2% over the past three months, even as management raised its 2026 earnings outlook. The 340B business, which serves eligible healthcare organisations, is experiencing pressure as drugmakers limit programme coverage. Management expects this drag to continue affecting its pharmacy services business in 2027 but declined to quantify the potential impact. CVS's Health Services segment, which likely includes the 340B business, generated $190.4 billion in revenue during fiscal 2025. The company trades at 22.5 times trailing earnings, roughly level with the S&P 500's 22.4 multiple.
