Requirements
  • Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a master's degree in nursing for the nurse practitioner track.
  • National certification by a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center for the nurse practitioner track.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia for the nurse practitioner track.
  • Bachelor's or master's degree as a Physician Assistant for the physician assistant track.
  • Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department's discretion.
  • Licensed clinical practice requires completion of applicable state and professional credentialing requirements.
  • Proficiency with computers.
  • Ability to work closely with others, work protracted or irregular hours, and work around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy or hard work, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing more than 40 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Manage comprehensive and individualized care for urology patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization, immediate post-discharge care, and ambulatory care.
  • Complete daily rounds and urology consultations or pre-procedure evaluations.
  • Complete integrated clinical assessments.
  • Participate in peri-operative patient management.
  • Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with urology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff about abnormal patient findings.
  • Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
  • Facilitate discharge and follow-up by coordinating appropriate services and tests before outpatient clinic appointments.
  • Perform necessary urological procedures according to established clinical guidelines, protocols, and scope of practice.
  • Develop individualized plans of care that include teaching, discharge planning, follow-up, and referrals.
  • Care for patients across the age continuum within the individual's education and certification scope.
  • Participate in physician rounds and consultations.
  • Identify unstable or complex urology patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention.
  • Assist with collection of clinic outcome measures.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of patient and family teaching and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff on education plans.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making and management of patient and family needs.
  • Use patient-care equipment safely.
  • Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
  • Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
  • Promote an environment that responds to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
  • Maintain current knowledge throughout the year and complete identified clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for urology patients.
  • Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
  • Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
  • Participate in community programs and distribute relevant literature.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated and efficient care.
  • Document plans of care, interventions, evaluations, and other clinical activities in patient medical records according to approved policies and compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in urology practice that improve patient outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
  • Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary patient-care, program-development, and education activities.
  • Serve as a professional role model.
  • Promote innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to urology patients and families.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
  • Participate in the WVUM/UHA Performance Improvement Plan.
  • Apply performance-improvement findings to change practice and improve patient care.
  • Review and interpret urology data, including patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • Assist urology administrators and directors with collecting outcome measures.
  • Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Clinical or surgical urology experience.
  • Master's-level degree as a Physician Assistant for the physician assistant track.
