About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional mechanical design experience in robotics, mechatronics, or complex automated machinery.
  • Working experience with electrical components and printed circuit boards, including understanding requirements and limitations such as cable routing, thermal management, power, strain relief, and vibration.
  • People management or formal mentorship experience, including mentoring or leading others, workload planning, performance feedback, and leading team deliverables.
  • Business-level Japanese proficiency equivalent to JLPT N2 or higher for vendor management and supplier negotiations, plus working English proficiency for cross-functional communication.
  • Experience managing bills of materials, sourcing, procurement, and supplier lead times.
  • Hands-on experience assembling and testing designs and working with other teams to identify failures and root causes.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, material selection, and design for manufacturability and assembly.
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Ability to commute to the office in Heiwajima, Tokyo.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, drive goal setting, and provide positive and constructive feedback to support team improvement.
  • Break product milestones into time-bound, measurable outcomes; distribute workloads; run design reviews; and coordinate progress, including where team members are outside the lead's direct authority.
  • Establish and maintain systems to improve efficiency and output, including computer-aided design standards, documentation, testing, and communication.
  • Lead hands-on design and system integration for critical subsystems of the Ghost drink-restocking robot, potentially including robotic arms, custom grippers, mobility or locomotion platforms, and smart shelves.
  • Own bills of materials, track part lead times, manage component sourcing, and keep prototype build schedules on track.
  • Work with suppliers, manufacturers, fabrication partners, and component distributors on custom computer numerical control machining, sheet metal, injection molding, and off-the-shelf parts.
  • Lead systematic debugging when parts fail during testing, identify root causes such as tolerances, material fatigue, and thermal wear, and turn findings into corrective design actions.
  • Work with software, firmware, production, and operations teams to ensure mechatronic integration.
  • Review peers' work and take ownership of projects through completion, including cross-functional coordination as needed.
  • Identify critical bottlenecks, map execution steps, align cross-functional stakeholders, and take ownership of team outcomes.
  • Adapt plans as circumstances change; prototype, test, learn from failures, and adjust execution.
  • Make informed technical decisions for mechatronic systems with a mechanical focus, while communicating with the Principal Electrical Engineer and other stakeholders.
  • Step in as needed to run design reviews, assemble hardware, or resolve availability issues.
  • Work with Japanese vendors and suppliers and coordinate in English with foreign software engineers.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in startups or other fast-paced environments.
  • Robotic arm, gripper, or actuator design experience.
  • Experience designing hardware deployed in retail, logistics, or unstructured environments.

About the Company

TELEXISTENCE

RaaS provider automating retail and logistics

TELEXISTENCE designs and operates robots that blend AI with remote control under a robotics-as-a-service model to automate labor tasks in retail and logistics. Its TX SCARA robot restocks beverages by using an AI system called Gordon to detect low stock and perform replenishment, handling up to about 1,000 bottles or cans per day with onboard NVIDIA Jetson edge AI; if the AI isn’t reliable, a human operator can take control remotely via a telepresence/VR interface. The company stands out by combining AI, remote operation, and ongoing RaaS contracts, backed by large funding and partnerships to scale mass production and expand internationally, including collaborations like Astra with Seven-Eleven Japan. TELEXISTENCE’s goal is to reduce labor shortages and boost efficiency by deploying versatile robots at scale across retail and logistics.
