About the company

Esri builds ArcGIS, the mapping and analysis software that governments, companies, and universities use to put their data on maps and study where and why things happen. In 1982, it released ARC/INFO, the first commercial geographic information system program, which ties places on a map to records in a database. Analysts make maps and run analyses in the ArcGIS Pro desktop app, teams share maps, dashboards, and field-survey apps through ArcGIS Online, and large agencies run ArcGIS Enterprise on their own servers. Customers pay for software licenses and subscriptions, and Esri also earns fees for consulting and training. Esri was founded in 1969 and is based in Redlands, California.

What believers are saying

  • Esri pays its own way: it reports zero debt while reinvesting 30% of yearly revenue in research and development.
  • Engineers get AI work: Esri unveiled tools for building AI agents in July 2026, adding to 100-plus pretrained mapping models.
  • Room to grow: Esri listed 460 open jobs in October 2026, including 175 engineering roles.

What critics are saying

  • Pay comes without equity: founders Jack and Laura Dangermond privately own Esri, so there are no stock grants.
  • Expect on-site work, often without visa help: 390 of 460 job posts in October 2026 were on-site; 223 excluded sponsorship.
  • Google is moving onto Esri's turf: thousands of organizations were piloting its Earth AI mapping models by October 2025.

What makes Esri unique

  • Esri leads its field: Forbes puts its share of the global market for mapping and location-analysis software at about 40%.
  • The Pentagon treats ArcGIS as its mapping standard: the Army planned a no-bid Esri enterprise contract in March 2026.
  • Its co-founder still runs it: Jack Dangermond, 81, remains president 57 years after starting Esri.

What's new in the Communications Utility Network Foundation.

What's new in the Communications Utility Network Foundation. By Cody Becker ArcGIS Solutions helps you make the most of your GIS by providing purpose-driven, industry-specific configurations of ArcGIS. In September 2026, Esri released Communications Utility Network Foundation version 2.0. This represents a significant update that includes a new data model built using the telecom domain network, along with updated maps, workflows, and documentation. If you're new to the solution, here's a quick overview: The Communications Utility Network Foundation accelerates utility network implementation for telecommunications organizations by providing a preconfigured data model, styles, and map. Like all Esri's solutions, Communications Utility Network Foundation is fully supported and included with your ArcGIS Online subscription or ArcGIS Enterprise licensing at no additional cost. Designed for the telecom domain network. Introduced in the September 2026 ArcGIS Solutions release, this update expands the Utility Network's capabilities for modeling and managing telecommunications networks. It is designed to handle the complexities of managing large numbers of features and to support advanced circuit modeling. Version 2.0 of the Communications Utility Network Foundation is built on the new telecom domain network rather than a traditional domain network. This change helps organizations model how modern communications networks are built and operated. It also supports network analysis to meet telecommunications needs while improving system performance. More than 200 participants helped test and refine the version 2.0 data model through Esri's Early Access Community. Their involvement helped improve the data model and user experience. Designed for modern communications networks. Modern communications networks combine fiber, coax, copper, and wireless infrastructure to deliver services. The Communications Utility Network Foundation supports this combination rather than focusing on a single network type. Its flexible framework allows organizations to model communications infrastructure and connectivity, represent assets and relationships consistently, and support a wide range of operational workflows as networks evolve. Support for circuit modeling. Beyond physical connectivity, communications organizations need to understand the services running across their infrastructure. Version 2.0 introduces support for circuit modeling and management, with capabilities for network diagrams, path tracing, circuit assignment status, and leased capacity. These capabilities help organizations understand how services traverse physical infrastructure, providing a foundation for service-oriented workflows. Updated documentation and resources. The Communications Utility Network Foundation includes more than just a data model. It also provides a comprehensive set of tools and resources to help you implement, configure, and manage your network: * Step-by-step workflows in the documentation * Sample data to help you learn key processes and test workflows * A data dictionary to explore and understand the model structure * Preconfigured map and symbology to get you or your organization running faster The latest release of the Communications Utility Network Foundation represents an important step forward for managing modern communications networks with ArcGIS. Skopenow partners with Esri to integrate Grid with ArcGIS.

Skopenow partners with Esri to integrate Grid with ArcGIS. Jake Rubenstein Director of Product Security teams need visibility into emerging threats, but they also need to understand how those threats could impact the people, assets, and operations they protect. Skopenow has partnered with Esri, the leader in spatial analytics and creator of ArcGIS, to help organizations assess this connection more easily. By integrating Skopenow's Grid threat intelligence and situational awareness platform with ArcGIS, organizations can evaluate emerging threats in the context of the geographic and operational data that informs their decisions. For teams responsible for keeping people and assets safe across multiple locations, that added context can shorten the path from identifying a threat to understanding its potential impact. Why Geographic Context Matters A threat rarely has the same significance everywhere. An incident near a corporate office, executive travel destination, critical facility, or operational route may require a different response than one with no connection to the organization. The threat's location helps determine its relevance. That can become difficult for security teams responsible for large numbers of locations and people. Analysts may need to identify a developing threat, establish where it is occurring, compare it against organizational assets, gather more context, and determine whether it warrants escalation. Much of that work can require moving between separate sources of information and disparate tools. Bringing threat intelligence into the geographic environment teams already use gives analysts a clearer view of potential exposure and helps them assess it faster. Connecting Grid and ArcGIS Grid identifies early signals of critical risks and enriches threat data to best help security teams understand emerging threats as they develop. ArcGIS provides organizations with location intelligence that helps them understand their geographic environment, including the facilities, infrastructure, and other locations relevant to their operations. Integrating Grid data into ArcGIS and its existing geographic workflows via webhook lets analysts assess threats against the locations that matter to their organization without manually building the full picture across disconnected systems. Access to Skopenow's Grid is purchased directly from Skopenow. In addition, you will need to add your HTTP endpoint URL to your Grid query in order to push data to ArcGIS, all on a self-service basis. If you have any questions, please reach out to [email protected] or your account representative. Expanding How Organizations Use Threat Intelligence Threat intelligence becomes more useful when teams can understand an emerging threat in the context of the locations, assets, and operations that matter to their organization. By incorporating ArcGIS data into Grid, organizations can bring location intelligence directly into their existing threat intelligence workflows, giving analysts more context to assess potential exposure and determine what requires attention. The integration will help security teams understand the geographic relevance of emerging threats sooner, supporting faster, more informed decisions.
