About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience in hardware design and validation of components, subsystems, and systems.
  • A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, material science, or physics, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns across the full software, hardware, and networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and live site operations.
  • Experience with hardware/software integration and real-time systems.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) or tolerance analysis.
  • Familiarity with UL 508A panel design standards or NFPA 70E.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing electrical sub-components for power and controls systems related to material handling projects, including three-phase and single-phase power distribution elements.
  • Support development of electrical layouts, schematics, and panel designs under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Design hardware sub-components to defined specifications and requirements, incorporating printed circuit board (PCB) layout best practices and electromagnetic interference/electromagnetic compatibility (EMI/EMC) compliance considerations.
  • Learn and apply modular and scalable design principles that prioritize reliability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Develop component and assembly drawings, bills of materials, and supporting documentation using computer-aided design (CAD) modeling software such as AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, and SolidWorks.
  • Support design and implementation of industrial communication networks using EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, and PROFINET protocols under senior engineer guidance.
  • Assist in developing control system architectures incorporating industrial PCs (IPCs), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.
  • Learn to specify, configure, and integrate variable frequency drives (VFDs) and associated interfaces within material handling systems.
  • Assist in selecting, specifying, and integrating sensors, encoders, safety circuits, and safety devices in accordance with applicable safety standards.
  • Build and test prototypes of electrical and controls sub-components to validate designs against specifications.
  • Evaluate designs through analysis and testing; troubleshoot, research root causes, and resolve defects.
  • Work with suppliers to understand fabrication and manufacturing feasibility, including Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and tolerance analysis.
  • Assist the team in making trade-off decisions regarding materials, availability, and cost.
  • Support compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC)/NFPA 70 and other applicable standards.
  • Research how proposed solutions affect product cost, functionality, quality, durability, and performance, and communicate findings to stakeholders.
  • Work with product managers, engineering peers, and other internal partners on team and product design discussions.
  • Get designs reviewed and refine them to meet requirements; escalate risks or problems in solutions or project plans.
  • Document research, design alternatives considered, and reasons for rejecting alternatives so future engineers understand the solutions.
  • Participate in intern interviews and help train interns about the team's mission, procedures, and products.

About the Company

Amazon

Sells products online and rents cloud computing

Amazon runs the largest online store in the United States and rents cloud computing to businesses and governments through Amazon Web Services. AWS pioneered renting computing power over the internet, and Amazon built its own delivery network to get orders to customers quickly. Shoppers buy from Amazon and from independent sellers on its store, and Prime members pay a subscription for fast free shipping, streaming video and music, and other perks. AWS rents out computing power, storage, databases, and AI tools so companies can run software without owning servers, and Amazon also makes Kindle e-readers and Echo speakers with the Alexa assistant. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, and it is based in Seattle, Washington.
